I am not really a fan of football, but this ongoing AFCON has seriously caught my interest, especially considering how well organised it has been. Seeing our home country feature in the AFCON after failing to qualify for the World Cup makes it even more interesting.
Nigeria lost to Congo in a penalty shootout after failing to secure qualification from the group stage initially. As a result, they also missed out on the World Cup. However, their performance in the AFCON has proven otherwise. They defeated all the teams in their group, securing a total of nine points with ease. In the Round of 16, they continued their fine form by outshining their opponents, Mozambique, with an emphatic 4–0 victory.
I believe the strong bond and unity within the team played a major role in their impressive performance. Nigeria’s team has not shone this brightly since the era of legends like Okocha and Kanu.
This current squad, featuring players like Osimhen, Iwobi, and Lookman, looks very promising. In the last match against Mozambique, Osimhen and Lookman appeared to have some issues. Osimhen complained that Lookman was not releasing the ball early enough. However, it was clear that Lookman actually provided Osimhen with two successful passes that led to goals. Overall, he contributed significantly to the team’s dominant 4–0 victory.
What we can observe here is Osimhen’s strong desire to score more goals. However, his attitude towards his teammate was not entirely appropriate. He requested a substitution and did not even remain on the bench; instead, he went straight to the dressing room.
What does this tell us, and what implications could it have for the team? It is important to assess the pros and cons of such behaviour to determine whether it might affect our next match against Algeria.
I am rooting for Nigeria to win today’s match. Algeria is not a weak team and will not be easy to handle. Still, we can remain hopeful, as Nigeria also boasts one of the strongest teams, with two of Africa’s best players at the moment.
