It is often said to be one of the most hiked mountains in the world. There is no road to the top but it still gets very crowded on summer days with perfect weather like this one.
A 'monadnock' is a geological term for a hard rock exposed by glacial erosion of softer rock around it, leaving behind this "sky island." Another term would be 'inselberg.'
