On New Year's eve the city was lively with activity in spite of the lack of formal outdoor celebrations, like in years past. Never mind that, people still took the streets wandering around looking for what exactly? Going where? Fascinating! Some rallied around buskers and musicians or anyone with loud enough music and dance. One rallying point was the old steam clock in the area known as Gastown.
Usually, the clock plays a wonderful pipe song that would fit well in any steampunk animation. On this occasion, however, the clock was not working, and it had the wrong time. Would it still play its song when the hour came? It was close to 9 PM. People waited with cameras and phones in hand.
The hour came, and the steam rose in the air in silence.
No whistle sounded in the crisp cold air. The clock hands did not move but remained still in that fixed moment.
People looked up at the clock, as if they couldn't quite understand why it wasn't lively singing its steam song. A murmur rippled through the crowd, slowly dispersing, as a few curious others streamed in and gathered around the timeless piece.
