It’s HAPPENING!!! ..
Between the cover photo and the title I am sure by now you have guessed correctly… We have a new baby pineapple on the way. This is so exciting because we have been waiting almost 5 years since I planted this in our garden. Long long while ago, I cut the top off of a pineapple. We ate the pineapple, and I planted the top in the garden around the summertime. By the end of the summer, it had rooted and I planted it in a pot. I had to move it indoors because of the cold weather that was coming; it wouldn’t have survived.
This is what it look like when I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago
I really had noticed something deep inside the center of the plant about four weeks ago, but I couldn’t quite tell if it was a baby pineapple or not. Then I forgot all about it until we noticed that it surely was.
Flash forward a few weeks and this is what we have now ..
The little sucker is really growing! you can definitely tell that the stem has grown quite a bit and that the pineapple is actually taking shape now. I would expect that it would double in size in the next couple of weeks. Typically it takes a long time for house-grown pineapples to grow fruit, then the next time it will take a little bit longer and fruits will progressively mature smaller.
We will try our best to nurse this along and have some thing we can eat in a few months. If not, no worries it was fun all the same. It’s just cool to see this progress from a cutting to fruiting.
Growing things indoors, in the north, east part of the United States isn’t always the easiest thing to do. We have hot summers, very cold winters, dry air in the winter, and lots of other factors working against growing tropical plants in a non-tropical climate. So needless to say the smallest of successes, bring the most satisfaction.
I know this is an extremely long post but I just wanted to take a few minutes this morning and share this exciting news with you.
