Cattle Galloway is the breed we have in the area. Its besides the cows we all know with the black and white appearance a great sight and I always stay and watch for a minute. Its a beef breed, and the farmer sells the big ones to local butchers. I know for all your vegetarians wont like to read this, but they arent mine, I have no say in the matter.
A galloway is a polled, mostly black, hairy cattle breed originally from the South West of Scotland. Galloways are often used in nature reserves as large grazers. They require little care and are not aggressive. I know that because I made a lot of pictures, when they are against the fence and are near to just be there quiet and photographing.
The galloway is descended from mainly black cattle, which have been present in Scotland since Celtic times. I don’t know why our local farmer choose to go and buy this breed, but its a great sight in our green pastures. Crosses with other breeds never took place. The first galloway studbook was established in 1879. The galloway is short-legged and has a shaggy coat of hair, which allows it to graze outdoors in winter and survive even in severe cold. The hair of the galloway is long and wavy and the auricles are also characteristic. Galloway cows have an average height at the withers of 120 cm and weigh 450-590 kg: bulls average 130 cm and weigh 600-900 kg. They are in the barn here in the winter but were allowed outside again 1st of April.
The animals are robust and fertile. Heifers are ready for breeding at 20-27 months, the calving interval is 365 days. The cows, which have a strong protective maternal instinct, can give birth to 10-12 calves during their lifetime. The calves weigh 25-30 kg at birth and are vital. In this Hurd its shows already, i saw so many little ones and its so great. The variety is suitable for extensive meat production. At the age of three, a galloway cow is ready for slaughter. Since the early 19th century, Galloway rib has been a well-known and appreciated type of meat among London butchers.
Galloways are used to graze and fertilize pastures. The manure attracts meadow birds such as the lapwing and the oystercatcher. An adult galloway needs about 1.5 acres of land. Galloways are used in many nature reserves aswell. Here they have two pieces of land of 3 acres and they rotate from the left to the right piece of land to trim the grass.
Offcourse there are the normal ones, and the pinks as we call them love Joey.
This is also my entry for the #amazingnature challenge by
. I always like to enter all the beauty we have in Holland to share with the world. In these covid days and coming out of lockdown and quarantine i even appreciate all that we have in our beautiful nature more than before, and thanks to the dogs we have because that was the reason we were allowed to go outside even in quarantine.
source for the Hurd info came from Wikipedia, and my personal experience living in the neighbourhood. All the pictures and the dog are mine.
