Deseandoles un feliz y próspero 2024 quiero expresarles mi más sincera emoción por presentar esta primera entrada al Amazing Nature Contest y lo primero que quiero comentarles es que la razón que me motivo a realizar esta publicación es que quiero que esta sea una postal para 2 mujeres muy especiales para mi desde que conocí hive, me refiero a mis a mis estimadas
The images you are seeing are from my country Venezuela, in Greater Caracas and more specifically from my workplace, the Institute of Experimental Biology (IBE). The Ibe is an institute that is attached to the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Venezuela and its history is as curious as it is exciting. It turns out that almost 66 years ago these spaces of the institute were going to be one of the rest houses of the Dictator Marcos Pérez Jiménez and although the work was almost finished, the infrastructure was never inhabited because in 1958 his regime would fall, giving rise to a new democratic stage in the country.

El Ibe es un instituto que esta adscrito a la Facultad de Ciencias de la Universidad de Venezuela y su historia es tan curiosa como apasionante, resulta que hace casi 66 años estos espacios del instituto iban a ser una de las casas de descanso del Dictador Marcos Pérez Jiménez y aunque los trabajos ya estaban por terminar, la infraestructura nunca se llego habitar porque en 1958 su régimen caería dando origen a una nueva etapa democrática en el país.
Those were the years in which the Central University of Venezuela already had its headquarters in the University City, a mega engineering work whose architect was the great architect and urban planner Carlos Raúl Villanueva. The first faculties and schools had already begun their academic activities in these spaces, but the biology school did not have any headquarters within the Campus spaces, so when the dictatorship fell, the spaces of that construction in Colinas de Bello Monte were taken over by students and teachers for biology school. This was the case for a while until the new democratic government of that time moved the headquarters of the biology school to the campus spaces that are the current Faculty of Sciences, while the facilities that housed the 2 largest Research Centers: the Center of Cell Biology and Botany in 1995 merged into a single institution: The Institute of Experimental Biology.
Fueron aquellos años en los que la Universidad Central de Venezuela ya tenía su sede en la Ciudad Universitaria una mega obra de ingeniería cuyo artífice fue el gran arquitecto y urbanista Carlos Raúl Villanueva. Ya las primeras Facultades y escuelas habían comenzado sus actividades académicas en estos espacios pero la escuela de biología no tenía sede alguna dentro de los espacios del Campus, por lo que al caer la dictadura los espacios de aquella construcción en Colinas de Bello Monte fueron tomadas por estudiantes y profesores para la escuela de biología. Así estuvo un tiempo hasta que con el nuevo gobierno democrático de entonces mudo la sede de la escuela de biología a los espacios del campus que es la actual Facultad de Ciencias mientras que las instalaciones que albergaban a los 2 Centros de Investigación más grandes: el Centro de Biología Celular y de Botánica en 1995 se fusionaron en una sola institución: El Instituto de Biología Experimental.
The Institute is made up of 31 scientific research laboratories, 20 of which are laboratories from the Center for Cellular Biology and 11 from the Center for Botany. This is my work space where I have been working as a full-time teacher/researcher for almost 12 years. The institute, like many spaces in the city of Caracas, is surrounded by dense vegetation and this is because it is located within a deciduous forest with a extension of just over 4 hectares known as the Arboretum Experimental Station, considered one of the few plant lungs in the area.
El Instituto se conforma de 31 laboratorios de investigación científica compuesto 20 de ellos por laboratorios del Centro de Biología Celular y 11 al Centro de Botánica. Este es mi espacio de trabajo donde llevo ya casi 12 años trabajando como profesor/investigador a dedicación exclusiva, el instituto como muchos espacios de la ciudad de Caracas esta rodeado de una densa vegetación y esto es porque se encuentra dentro de un bosque deciduo con una extensión de poco mas de 4 hectáreas conocida como Estación Experimental Arboretum considerado uno de los pocos pulmones vegetales de la zona.
It is in this context that I want to share these beautiful photos of the plant spaces that the institute has, many of them are epiphytes such as bromeliads and orchids, these plants are called that because they need another plant organism such as the branches of other trees and of course being Venezuela, a tropical country, could not miss the palms that are members of the Arecaceae family. Their presence is almost total throughout the country and finally I want to introduce you to the oldest member of the institute: Babushka! She is a babe who was incorporated from her youthful state to the institute almost from the first moment of its foundation, so she is already going to be almost 30 years old! The space where she is is not a pond prepared exclusively to house her, but this was going to be the recreation pool of what was going to be the house of the dictator Pérez Jiménez! Well, perhaps we could say that nature is reclaiming its spaces.
Es en este contexto que quiero compartirles estas hermosas fotos de los espacios vegetales que tiene el instituto, muchas de ellas son epifitas como bromelias y orquídeas, estas platas se llaman así porque necesitan de otro organismo vegetal como las ramas de otros árboles y por supuesto siendo Venezuela un país tropical no podían faltar las palmas miembros de la familia familia Arecaceae su presencia es casi total en todo el país y por último quiero presentarles al miembro más antiguo del instituto: Babushka! Es una baba que fue incorporada desde su estado juvenil al instituto casi desde primer momento de su fundación, así que ya va a cumplir casi 30 años! El espacio donde se encuentra no es un estanque preparado exclusivamente para albergarla, sino que esta iba a ser la piscina de esparcimiento de la que iba a ser la casa del dictador Pérez Jiménez! Bueno, quizás podríamos decir que la naturaleza esta reclamando sus espacios.
And well friends, I hope you liked this postcard of my beloved and entropic city, the IBE is a little piece of the UCV in one of the vegetal lungs of Colinas de Bello Monte, it is a natural symbiosis between technological development and nature that In few places you will be able to see, I hope later to make an entry highlighting the famous macaws that fly through the skies of Caracas and that pass by here from time to time to rest.
