Hi fellow Hiveians,
This is my first post here in the amazing nature group! Love that there’s a group that’s got lots of people in it for something great like nature and the amazing critters in it.
What am I?
So what better way to start out my first post like asking for some help identifying a new critter for us?
Our son and I were out for our evening stroll of the neighborhood and checking out the animals. We’ve got a good amount of them, we are next to a major river so there’s lots of things enjoying the abundance of plant and animal life around. We have the normals like squirrels, chipmunks, several bird varieties like red breasted robins, crows, cardinals, blue jays, wood peckers, hawks. We also have some really cool ones like muskrats and red bellied cooter turtles.
What is this little guy? I don’t have much experience with groundhogs and after talking to my wife about it we think that’s what it is. What do y’all think? They loved the berries, enough to let us get like 5 feet from them without moving an inch lol.
What Berry?
Now for the other thing. The birds, animals and bugs all loved this tree. What kind of berry is this? I know there’s lots of really cool wild edibles but I’m not familiar with such a massive tree having some berry humans could eat. I figured if all the animals are eating it, we might be able to as well. I don’t test those things until I talk to people who know more than I do lol.
This tree is easily 50 feet tall. I’m not familiar with one that produces edible berries. Any tips?
The final picture is the cute one of the little guy checking us out, trying to figure out if he can come back out to eat berries again.
Let me know what you think of our latest find! We love learning about the flora and fauna of our area! In our walk, a lady told us, that saw the animal too, she couldn’t name anything outside of a squirrel and chipmunk. It’s a shame! What’s closest to us is the easiest to learn from.
