Hi fellow Hiveians,
The other day we spotted this massive cicada on the deck getting out of the moisture!
Giant Cicada
One of the interesting things about this summer versus last is that we’ve definitely had a change in the bug scenery in where we are. Last year we got thousands of these obnoxious small flies all over the place on our deck and it was very frustrating and gross to be out there. This summer since we’ve planted so many of the plants the bugs seem to have stayed away which is great! It helps with our enjoyment of the deck for sure when there aren’t lots of nasty things flying around. I don’t know what type of plant we are using that’s keeping them away but it’s probably partly the benefit of the basil we’ve got out on the deck. That’s what we’ve had since the beginning of the summer so that’s been great.
When the little man and I were out on the deck for our morning look at the different things though we got a heck of a surprise! There was a huge cicada just hanging out on the deck! I’ve never seen one this close and alive before it was awesome! My wife didn’t agree that it was awesome hahaha but the little man and I enjoyed seeing it. We went out on the deck to just check the plants and were looking around when I happened to look up and check out how the cucumbers were doing and bam this giant thing was right there! It took me back a bit and I gently moved the little man so he wouldn’t freak out and fall.
Needless to say we didn’t spend a lot of time on the deck after we saw this thing lol. It was interesting to see how big it was! It was easily the size of the palm of my hand. I guess that’s how they can make so much noise during the summer when you are a massive bug like that!
