El jardín de mi hermana es una pequeña cajita de sorpresas naturales, porque tiene una gran variedad de plantas. Ya les he compartido algunas de ellas junto a sus hermosísimas y llamativas flores, pero no todas son el centro de atención. Algunas pueden pasar desapercibidas, como es el caso de la que en esta ocasión les traigo, conocida en términos científicos como Commelina Erecta. Aunque esta hierba también es conocida como Hierba de Santa Lucia, Espuelitas, Mataliste, Rosilla, Mataliz y en el caso de Venezuela, Canutillo, estos serían sus nombres en español. Siendo originaria de la zona sur de Estados Unidos, también tiene sus nombres comunes en ese idioma, entre los que destacan, Whitemouth Dayflowe, Erect Dayflower, y Widow´s Tears. Sin embargo, es necesario destacar, que, aunque es de origen norteamericano, a esta planta se les puede encontrar diseminada a lo largo de toda Centro y Sur América.
My sister's garden is a little box of natural surprises, because it has a great variety of plants. I have already shared with you some of them along with their beautiful and showy flowers, but not all of them are the center of attention. Some may go unnoticed, as is the case of the one I bring you this time, known in scientific terms as Commelina Erecta. Although this herb is also known as “Hierba de Santa Lucia, Espuelitas, Mataliste, Rosilla, Mataliz” and in the case of Venezuela, “Canutillo”, these would be its names in Spanish. Being native to the southern United States, it also has its common names in that language, among them, Whitemouth Dayflower, Erect Dayflower, and Widow's Tears. However, it is necessary to emphasize that, although it is of North American origin, this plant can be found spread throughout Central and South America.
Esta herbácea, entre sus peculiaridades tiene la habilidad de poder crecer tanto de forma vertical como recostada debido a su capacidad de enraizar en los nudos que poseen sus carnosos tallos. Estos cilíndricos y verde tallos, se caracterizan por ser muy ramificados, y llegan a alcanzan una longitud que puede superar los 90 cm, permitiéndole a esta planta cubrir rápidamente amplias extensiones. Estas singularidades, la hace muy atractiva a nivel ornamental, para ser utilizada como manto vegetal, en jardines o bordes de cultivos.
This herbaceous, among its peculiarities has the ability to grow both vertically and recumbent due to its ability to root in the nodes that have their fleshy stems. These cylindrical and green stems, are characterized by being very branched, and reach a length that can exceed 90 cm, allowing this plant to quickly cover large areas. These singularities make it very attractive at an ornamental level, to be used as a ground cover in gardens or borders of crops.
Otro detalle súper curioso que descubrí sobre esta planta, es que, el nombre de un popular plato típico de la gastronomía mexicana, debe su nombre a ella. Como han podido leer hasta ahora, está peculiar planta perenne está resultando todo un estuche de monerías. Imagino, que la mayoría a escuchado hablar de las famosas Quesadillas, pues, resulta que la estructura florar o brácteas donde se encuentran envueltas las flores de esta planta se llama Quesadilla. Y debido a la semejanza en cuanto a su forma este famoso platillo de origen mexicano, empezó a llamarse de esa forma.
Another super curious detail that I discovered about this plant, is that the name of a popular typical dish of Mexican gastronomy, owes its name to it. As you have been able to read so far, this peculiar perennial plant is turning out to be a whole case of cuteness. I imagine that most of you have heard of the famous Quesadillas, well, it turns out that the flower structure or bracts where the flowers of this plant are wrapped is called Quesadilla. And because of the similarity in its shape, this famous Mexican dish began to be called Quesadilla.
Pero, eso no es todo sobre sus inflorescencias, cada Quesadilla tiene en su interior tres capullos de estas pequeñas y singulares flores. Estos botones se turnan para abrir uno a la vez, transformándose en una pequeña, singular, y efímera flor de color azul intenso. La corta existencia de cada flor inicia con los primeros rayos del astro rey, y finaliza al llegar el mediodía. Es decir, la muerte, de una flor le da paso a una nueva flor con la llegada de un nuevo amanecer. Metafóricamente hablando, es la triste y efímera historia de hermanas trillizas que lamentablemente nunca llegan a conocerse.
But, that's not all about their inflorescences, each “Quesadilla” has three buds of these unique little flowers inside. These buds take turns opening one at a time, transforming into a small, singular, and ephemeral flower of intense blue color. The short existence of each flower begins with the first rays of the sun, and ends at noon. That is to say, the death of a flower gives way to a new flower with the arrival of a new dawn. Metaphorically speaking, it is the sad and ephemeral story of triplet sisters who unfortunately never get to know each other.
Como pueden apreciar en las imágenes, las hermosas flores de esta planta son muy sencillas solo poseen 3 pétalos, de ellos, los dos más grandes son de un azul intenso, que contrasta con el pequeño tercer pétalo de color blanco. Ahora, aunque son poco frecuentes, también, se pueden encontrar variantes en cuanto al color de los dos pétalos más grande, estos pueden llegar a ser blancos o lila. En otro orden de ideas, las flores suelen encontrarse en el extremo de los tallos o en su defecto emergiendo en la unión de las hojas superiores con el tallo.
As you can see in the images, the beautiful flowers of this plant are very simple, they only have 3 petals, of which the two largest are an intense blue, which contrasts with the small white third petal. Now, although they are rare, you can also find variants in terms of the color of the two larger petals, these can become white or lilac. In another order of ideas, the flowers are usually found at the end of the stems or otherwise emerging at the junction of the upper leaves with the stem.
Ya les he comentado varios aspectos interesantes y peculiares de la Commelina Erecta, pero es necesario resaltar, que su uso no es únicamente ornamental, también encontré información sobre sus propiedades medicinales. Sin embargo, debo aclarar en cuanto a sus usos solo encontré información a nivel de la medicina tradicional o natural. Ámbito donde según entendí, se viene usando desde hace mucho tiempo, al parecer sus flores y hojas en forma de jugo, pueden aliviar la conjuntivitis. Esta propiedad curativa en particular, es justamente la que le dio origen a su nombre común, ya que, dentro de la religión cristiana es Santa Lucia, la Patrona de los ciegos y oftalmólogos. En realidad, no estoy segura de sus propiedades curativas, usándola como diurético, o para problemas cutáneos, de garganta o afecciones a nivel óptico. Lo que, si es cierto, es que entre su estructura química se encuentran alcaloides, taninos, cumarinas, entre otros, compuestos que podrías otorgarles sus propiedades medicinales.
I have already mentioned several interesting and peculiar aspects of Commelina Erecta, but it is necessary to emphasize that its use is not only ornamental, I also found information about its medicinal properties. However, I must clarify that I only found information about its uses in traditional or natural medicine. As I understood, it has been used for a long time, apparently its flowers and leaves in the form of juice, can alleviate conjunctivitis. This healing property in particular, is precisely what gave rise to its common name, since, within the Christian religion is Santa Lucia, the patron saint of the blind and ophthalmologists. Actually, I am not sure of its healing properties, using it as a diuretic, or for skin problems, throat or optical conditions. What is certain is that among its chemical structure there are alkaloids, tannins, coumarins, among others, compounds that could give it its medicinal properties.
Insisto, esta planta es toda una caja de sorpresas, otra curiosidad hace referencia al origen de su nombre, pero en este caso es torno al nombre científico. El mismo, fue otorgado por Carlos Linneo y según se le coloco en honor a los hermanos Commelin de nacionalidad francesa, los cuales vivieron durante el siglo XVIII. Estos tres hermanos eran botánicos, sin embargo, solo dos llegaron a destacarse por su trabajo, estos serían simbolizados por los dos pétalos azul intenso. En cambio, el pequeño pétalo blanco vendría a representar al tercer hermano, el cual, nunca logro destacarse a nivel científico.
I insist, this plant is a box of surprises, another curiosity refers to the origin of its name, but in this case, it is around the scientific name. It was given by Charles Linnaeus and according to him it was placed in honor of the Commelin brothers of French nationality, who lived during the eighteenth century. These three brothers were botanists, however, only two of them stood out for their work, these would be symbolized by the two intense blue petals. On the other hand, the small white petal would come to represent the third brother, who never managed to stand out at a scientific level.
