Feliz año nuevo, querida comunidad #AmazingNature, mis mejores deseos para todos en este 2023. Quise comenzar este año compartiéndoles uno de esos, hermosos regalos de la naturaleza, que si no bajamos la velocidad de nuestras agitadas vidas y estamos muy atentos al mundo que nos rodea, nos lo perderemos. Se trata de una de esas pequeñas plantas que crecen silvestre como maleza, a orillas de las carreteras o en espacios baldíos, eso sí, siempre cercana a lugares húmedos o cuerpos de agua.
Happy New Year, dear #AmazingNature community, my best wishes to all of you in this 2023. I wanted to start this year by sharing with you one of those, beautiful gifts of nature, that if we don't slow down our hectic lives and be very attentive to the world around us, we will miss it. It is one of those small plants that grow wild as weeds, on roadsides or in vacant spaces, always close to wet places or bodies of water.
Muchos la conocen comúnmente con el nombre de Mimosa, pero, si la queremos llamar por su nombre correcto, este es Neptunia plena. Esta planta forma parte del género Neptunia, el cual está conformado principalmente por plantas acuáticas, sin embargo, esta especie, es semi-acuatica. Esto quiere decir, que puede desarrollarse de forma terrestre y dentro del agua, pero, a diferencia de otras especies del mismo género, debido a que su tallo no es esponjoso, no sobrevive en el agua de forma flotante.
Many people commonly know it by the name of Mimosa, but, if we want to call it by its correct name, this is Neptunia plena. This plant is part of the genus Neptunia, which is mainly composed of aquatic plants, however, this species is semi-aquatic. This means that it can develop terrestrially and, in the water, but, unlike other species of the same genus, because its stem is not spongy, it does not survive in the water in a floating form.
La familia botánica a la que pertenece esta hierba perenne, originaria de la zona sur de Estados Unidos, América del Sur y las Antillas es la Fabaceae. Se caracteriza por crecer de forma erecta, llegando a alcanzar hasta 1,2 metros de altura, aunque, en algunas ocasiones puede crecer extendida sobre el suelo. Por otro lado, sus hojas me recuerdan a pequeñas plumas y a este tipo de hojas se les llama hojas pinnadas y como pueden ver en las imágenes las hojas están estructuradas por un eje principal y de él emergen en pares unas muy pequeñitas hojitas. Cada una de estas hojas pinnadas pueden llegar a tener hasta 30 pares de estas pequeñas hojitas.
The botanical family to which this perennial herb belongs, native to the southern United States, South America and the Antilles, is the Fabaceae. It is characterized by growing erect, reaching up to 1.2 meters in height, although, in some occasions it can grow extended on the ground. On the other hand, its leaves remind me of small feathers and this type of leaves are called pinnate leaves and as you can see in the images the leaves are structured by a main axis and from it emerge in pairs very small leaves. Each of these pinnate leaves can have up to 30 pairs of these small leaves.
En cuanto a las curiosas y llamativas inflorescencias, se asemejan a una borla hecha de hilo de estambre amarillo, pero, son realmente peculiares, ya que son bisexuales. Están conformadas por dos tipos de flores, un grupo de flores infértiles o masculinas, ubicadas en la parte inferior y otro grupo de flores fértiles o femeninas, en la parte superior. Ahora, lo que a simple vista identificamos como unos vaporosos pétalos amarillos, son en realidad estambres florales.
As for the curious and striking inflorescences, they resemble a tassel made of yellow stamen thread, but they are really peculiar, since they are bisexual. They are formed by two types of flowers, a group of infertile or male flowers, located in the lower part and another group of fertile or female flowers, in the upper part. Now, what at first glance we identify as vaporous yellow petals, are actually flower stamens.
Finalmente, en lo que respecta a los frutos, esta planta es una leguminosa, así que, su fruto tiene forma de vaina alargada que llega a medir como máximo 5,5 cm de largo, por 1,2 cm de ancho. Inicialmente las vainas son de color verde claro, con un borde marrón, al ir madurando se van tornando del todo de color marrón. En cuanto a las semillas, las vainas suelen tener entre 12 y 20 semillas, las cuales, son de color marrón. Son bastante pequeñas, cuando mucho superan los 4 mm de largo y 2 mm de ancho.
Finally, regarding the fruits, this plant is a leguminous plant, so its fruit is shaped like an elongated pod that measures a maximum of 5.5 cm long and 1.2 cm wide. Initially the pods are light green in color, with a brown border; as they ripen, they turn completely brown. As for the seeds, the pods usually have between 12 and 20 seeds, which are brown. They are quite small, at most exceed 4 mm long and 2 mm wide.
