The plant that I bring you today is considered by some to be the queen of summer, due to the generosity of its flowering and the variety of vibrant colors of its delicate flowers, which seem to be made of silk. Scientifically it is known as Portulaca Umbraticola Kunth, although, at a popular level, it is better known as Portulaca, Silk Flower, Wax Flower, and Love for a while. This last name is due to the fact that they have the peculiar habit of closing their petals with the arrival of the night. It belongs to the Portulaca genus, and is one of the 50 species that make up the Portulacaceae family.
Aunque en la actualidad, debido a su belleza y facilidad de cultivo, esta especie suculenta se encuentra diseminada en zona de clima tropical y templado, de los distintos continentes, originalmente, es nativa de Sudamérica, específicamente de Argentina y Brasil. Se puede decir que es una planta bastante resistente, no necesita de mucha atención y cuidados, aunque tiene preferencia por los suelos arenoso, y con buen drenaje, realmente subsiste en cualquier tipo de suelo. Una vez sembrada, se propaga muy rápidamente, eso sí, se desarrollará mucho mejor si está expuesta a pleno sol, además, al ser una suculenta, retiene humedad en su estructura, por lo que soporta muy bien las temperaturas altas e inclusive las sequías.
Although at present, due to its beauty and ease of cultivation, this succulent species is scattered in tropical and temperate climate zones of different continents, it is originally native to South America, specifically Argentina and Brazil. It can be said that it is a fairly hardy plant, it does not need much attention and care, although it has a preference for sandy soils, and with good drainage, it really subsists in any type of soil. Once planted, it spreads very quickly, but it will develop much better if it is exposed to full sun, also, being a succulent, it retains moisture in its structure, so it supports very well the high temperatures and even droughts.
La Portulaca Umbraticola, posee tallos carnosos y lampiños, de color verde o rojizo, los cuales, pueden ser de porte rastrero o erectos, pudiendo llegar a alcanzar aproximadamente unos 25 cm de largo. Al ser una suculenta, sus pequeñas hojas verdes de tendencia plana y ovaladas también son carnosa, porque acumulan agua en sus estructuras internas, se ubican de forma alterna a lo largo del tallo y tiene un tamaño entre 1 y 3cm. de largo y de 0,3 a 1,3cm de ancho. Por otro lado, posee raíces fasciculadas, que no se desarrollan muy profundamente en el sustrato, cuando mucho llegan a alcanzar unos 25cm de profundidad.
The Portulaca Umbraticola, has fleshy and hairless stems, green or reddish, which can be creeping or erect, and can reach approximately 25 cm long. Being a succulent, its small green leaves of flat and oval tendency are also fleshy, because they accumulate water in their internal structures, are located alternately along the stem and has a size between 1 and 3cm. long and 0.3 to 1.3cm wide. On the other hand, it has fasciculate roots, which do not develop very deep in the substrate, at most they reach about 25cm deep.
Para finalizar, les hablaré un poco sobre las hermosas, delicadas y proliferas flores de esta planta suculentas, las cuales emergen en grupos de hasta 6 unidades de tallos terminales que llegan a medir máximo 5mm. Sus curiosa flores, son simple en forma de rosetas que llegan medir 5cm. de diámetros y sus pétalos de aspecto sedoso los podemos encontrar de diversos y muy vistosos colores como el blanco, rosado, rojo, lila, anaranjado, o amarillo, tal cual como les muestro en las imágenes que hoy les comparto.
Finally, I will tell you a little about the beautiful, delicate and prolific flowers of this succulent plant, which emerge in groups of up to 6 units of terminal stems that measure up to 5mm. Its curious flowers are simple in the form of rosettes that measure up to 5cm. in diameter and its petals of silky aspect can be found in diverse and very showy colors such as white, pink, red, lilac, orange, or yellow, as I show you in the images that I share with you today.
