Hace unas semanas mi tía me envió fotografías de una planta en su jardín, me sorprendí al observarlas, pues inmediatamente lo que vi fue un Pokemon llamado Weepinbell, para aquellos que no saben qué es un Pokemon, son personajes de un dibujo animado japonés muy popular desde la década de los 90 hasta hoy. Así que lo primero que hice fue enviarle a mi tía una foto del Pokemon, y aunque ella no conoce este dibujo animado se sorprendió al ver el parecido.

A few weeks ago my aunt sent me pictures of a plant in her garden, I was surprised when I looked at them because immediately what I saw was a Pokemon called Weepinbell, for those who do not know what a Pokemon is, they are characters from a Japanese cartoon very popular since the 90's until now. So the first thing I did was to send my aunt a picture of the Pokemon and even though she doesn't know this cartoon she was surprised at the resemblance.

Mi padre le entregó esta planta a mi tía hace un par de años, la adquirió en una localidad lejos de la ciudad, y mi tía no estaba segura de que especie de planta era, así que empecé a buscar en internet plantas parecidas a los Pokemon sin éxito, me topé con algunas plantas carnívoras muy interesantes, pero ninguna era la que mi tía posee, hasta que ella me dijo que tenía la idea de que esta planta era una orquídea, así que me di a la tarea de buscar entre las orquídeas y finalmente la encontré, según parece es un Catasetum macroglossum, una especie de orquídea de epifita, es decir que crece sobre otro vegetal u objeto pero no lo parasita nutricionalmente, es originaria de Sudamérica y prefiere los climas tropicales, cálidos y húmedos, crece mayormente en palmas y ramas de árboles de hoja caduca muertos.

My father gave this plant to my aunt a couple of years ago, he acquired it in a location far from the city, and my aunt wasn't sure what species of plant it was, so I started searching the internet for Pokemon-like plants without success, I came across some very interesting carnivorous plants, but none were the one my aunt has, until she told me she had the idea that this plant was an orchid, so I set myself the task of searching among the orchids and finally i found it, it seems to be a Catasetum macroglossum, a kind of epiphyte orchid, it means that it grows on another plant or object but does not parasitize it nutritionally, it is native to South America and prefers tropical, warm and humid climates, it grows mostly on palms and branches of dead deciduous trees.

Mi tía tomó fotografías a esta orquídea cronológicamente según sus distintas etapas de florecimiento, debo darle crédito y reconocer su excelente trabajo fotográfico. Según parece este florecimiento es algo efímero, pero en esta ocasión las flores murieron más rápido de lo normal por haber sido cambiadas de locación, tal parece que son bastante delicadas.

My aunt took pictures of this orchid chronologically according to its different flowering stages, I must give her credit and recognize her excellent photographic work. It seems that this blooming is somewhat ephemeral, but on this occasion the flowers died faster than normal because they were moved from one location to another, it seems that they are quite weak.
