Hey, dear Hivebeez,
I was at the quarry-lake of Székesfehérvár again! That little lake is artifical, surrounded by granite-rocks, on the outskirts of the city, popular place for families and cyclists.
It was formed unexpectedly in 1917 when the quarry operating between high rock walls was flooded by water in a single night. The lake has since become a popular resting place in Székesfehérvár, especially among anglers, due to the flora and fauna that has developed over the decades. Its surroundings are a unique excursion destination, where many catering units serve the comfort of visitors.
At first, many people bathed in the newly created lake - boats could even be rented on site - but after the increasing number of deaths (accidents, suicides), area officials decided to ban bathing instead. The water of the lake is already cold and deep (the eastern corner is the deepest, it can mean up to 6-8 meters), and at the bottom of the stagnant water you can still find the miners' tools. The mine is located in the vicinity of the highest point of Székesfehérvár, at an altitude of 187 meters above sea level.
The birds were domicilated at the lake with the support of the district residents. They hatch their eggs in artificial nests and the caretaker of the lake feeds them. Unfortunately many visitors feed them with bread, though not allowed!
I was very happy to discover a beautiful little mandarin duck that hasn't been here before.
