They were forced out of their colony by a strong current of water, then they were thrown into a larger waterway. They don't seem willing. They preferred their colony even though it was only a ditch in the rice fields. That ditch is their preferred habitat. It was amazing when the crowd got together and slowly climbed over the wall, high for them, in their struggle to return to their colony: in a ditch.
They are freshwater snails of the species Pila ampullacea, an aquatic gastropod mollusk that has an operculum. The two things I previously noted as interesting things about this gastropod species are that it has a combined respiratory organ of the lungs and gills so that it can expand its foraging area both in water and over water,, and it has an operculum, a kind of trapdoor to close the opening of the shell when the soft parts of its body are pulled.
It was easily found here in Aceh-Sumatra as well as in various other areas of Southeast Asia.
