“Grandparents’ Knowledge”

My garden is getting better but still the weather in Nova Scotia, Canada is unstable. Some wild plants are doing very well but the vegetable garden is growing slowly.

I lived with my grandparents since I was born. That’s why I learned many things from my grandparents. When my parents were working, me and my brother were staying with our grandparents. My grandfather was a very hard worker and unique. My grandmother is also very hard worker and gentle. Basically, they can do almost everything about their lives.

Especially their gardening and growing skills were amazing. My grandmother is very old so she stopped growing things. I loved her vegetables and flowers. Also, her cooking was awesome. I really miss them and their life knowledge. They never trained me but I learned through watching them. However, I need more knowledge now!

By the way, I have severe allergy so, I have to protect myself from bugs especially mosquitoes and black flies. I use a hat with a net for gardening. This is originally for fishing I guess. I want to get a Japanese gardening hat with a net someday. I also want to get an earth sieve when I go to Japan next time.

“祖父母の知識”

庭の作物は少しずつ育っていますが、カナダ•ノバスコシア州の天候はいまだ不安定です。野生の野花はよく育っていますが、畑の作物のペースはかなりゆっくりです。

わたしは産まれた時から祖父母と一緒に住んでいたので、2人から色んなことを学びました。両親が働いている時、私と弟はたいてい祖父母と過ごしました。祖父は働き者でユニークな人でした。祖母も働き者で優しいです。2人とも生活のほとんどの事を自分達でできます。

2人の畑の知識は特にすごかったです。祖母は年老いたので、もう何かを作ることは終えました。祖母の野菜と花が好きでした。料理も美味しかったなー。祖父母が恋しいですし、2人の知識をもっと知りたかったなと思います。祖父母は私に何かを教え込むというわけではなく、2人を見て自然に学びました。今になって、もっともっと知識がほしいなと感じます。

ところで、私はアレルギー疾患がひどいので、畑作業の時は蚊やぶよから肌を守らなければなりません。畑ではネット付きの帽子をかぶります。元々は魚釣り用の帽子のようです。日本の大きな虫除けネット付帽子が欲しいです。それから、土ふるいも欲しいです。

Cucumbers, lettuce, beets, potatoes, cabbage, and spinach are doing well but somebody picked green peas…
きゅうり、レタス、ビート、じゃがいも、キャベツとほうれん草はよく育ってますが、グリンピースは何者かにもぎ取られてしまいました。
