Snow Day
We had our first snowstorm yesterday. Although we've already had a few snow days this year, yesterday's was the most substantial so far. We had to shovel snow several times. Schools and some businesses were closed yesterday. The snow was wet and heavy, which I found challenging for shovelling. I prefer the light, powdery snow.
In my hometown in Japan, we experience even more snow. The first snowfall occurs in October or November in the mountains. By December, we accumulate 600cm (19 feet 8 inches) of snow annually. We get even more in January and February. People shovel snow almost every day, sometimes multiple times. Schools and offices usually don't close. Occasionally, transportation might be affected, but normally, people carry on with their activities.
My dog looked incredibly excited outside. During our walk, we saw beautiful trees covered with thick, heavy snow, including plants, trees, and trucks.
Our mudroom was covered in snow. We couldn't see outside well due to the snow.

It looks like shaved ice, known as 'Kaki gouri (かき氷)' in Japanese. The snowflakes look beautiful.

This is a common issue for us in winter. After the snowplow passes, our driveway gets covered with thick frozen snow. Getting our cars out isn't easy unless we shovel. This snow is typically very heavy, hard, and thick.
This is my favourite birch tree in our driveway.
We had to dig out our car as well.

雪の日
昨日は今年初の大雪でした。すでに何度か雪がふっているのですが、今回のは一番大雪でした。雪かきを何回かする必要がありました。昨日は、学校やビジネスが休校や休みになっていました。昨日の雪はベタ雪で重たかったです。ベタ雪は雪かきが大変なので、軽いパウダースノーがいいです。
日本の故郷ではもっと雪が降り積もります。１０月や１１月にはもう山には雪が降り積もります。１２月くらいまでには約６００センチくらい積雪量があります。１月、２月にはさらに降ります。学校や会社は、そう簡単には休校も休みにもなりません。交通機関もよほどのことがない限り止まることはありません。住民も休むことなく活動し続けます。
私の犬は外でものすごく喜んでいます。散歩中、植物、木々、トラックなどあらゆるものが重たくて分厚い雪で覆われていました。
土間の部分が雪に覆われていました。雪で外の様子がよく見えませんでした。

これは雪国に住む人あるあるの問題です。除雪機が通った後は、私道の入り口が厚くて硬い雪で塞がれてしまいます。車を出すにはこの雪を雪かきしなければならないのですが、重くて硬くて一苦労です。
