Ever seen a lizard taking a drink from a bird bath?
I thought that he was only tanning in the sun, but no, he was a thirsty little guy.
A drink can make one to bear with the heat of the sun and that rock of the birdbath was very hot. We are in between a rock and a hard place, as if we move the birdbath into a shady spot, the cats will be able to get to the birds. The birds also like the bird bath in the open, but it is exposed to the sun and the heat turns the water into a steam bath.
So the birds only come to drink early morning and late afternoon when the sun is behind a big old cork oak tree.
The lizard today was a surprise.
So he made his way along on the edge of the birdbath and my camera was following him.
Then he stopped and I was hoping that he would take a swim.
But not to be as he only took a drink.
And then he was on his way back again.
He took a final peep at the water again and I imagined what a flying dive would look like on camera.
Nope, he was on his way down.
This was the final shot as then he disappeared behind behind a plant.
Now I have seen leguaan's and other water lizards in the water, but never a small "Cape Skink" (Trachylepis capensis) drinking from a birdbath.
We have a very busy garden with all of nature's residents doing their thing here and there is always something different to see. Now with summer coming on strong, the winter lethargy is replaced with a new energy that at times delivers stunning shows.
Just a shame that we don't share that energy, as the end of year is approaching and it was a tough year for all of us.
We can only hope that the energy will return at the start of the new year.
And That's All Friends!
