Los jardines botánicos tienen varias funciones importantes, una es la conservación y el estudio de especies vegetales, algunas de las cuales no son originarias del lugar y se han adaptado a las condiciones ecológicas. La otra función es educativa y recreativa.
Junto con mi hija, mi hermana y dos amigas realizamos una visita al Jardín Botánico de Caracas. Este se encuentra en terrenos de la Universidad Central de Venezuela.
Llegamos a la entrada y de allí en adelante caminando por senderos, estuvimos admirando la vegetación.
Esta tuna estaba en floración y su flor como la de la mayoría de las plantas cactáceas son muy llamativas.
Otra planta que vimos en floración fue la de Heliconia o platanillo.
Varias especies de Palma se encuentran diseminadas por el jardín. En la fotografía se observa la palma y su placa de identificación con su nombre y el lugar de origen.
La palma de Ceilán, nativa del sudeste de Asia, va a ser dentro de poco tiempo la sensación del jardín botánico porque ya ha iniciado su proceso de floración. De acuerdo a lo que nos informó la guía, esta planta tiene aproximadamente 60 años y luego de la floración la planta se marchita y luego muere. Florece una vez en su vida y floración es muy abundante, produce millones de flores. Es la inflorescencia ramificada más grande. Una vez que fructifique, los frutos serán utilizados en la propagación de esta especie, que vive en condiciones vulnerables en su centro de origen.
Grandes árboles como lo que les muestro en las fotografías. Los admiro por su fortaleza, sus raíces, sus ramas que pueden llegar al suelo y extenderse.

Este jardín es un oasis dentro de la ciudad. Todo un mundo vegetal que debe ser conservado en condiciones adecuadas. Las especies que allí conviven lo requieren para evitar que se pierdan .
