Alguien ha llamado a esta especie las canas de la montaña y en la primera imagen se puede ver porqué. Esa fotografía corresponde a un sector de un bosque húmedo de alta montaña y este tipo de paisaje es recurrente en los bosques andinos.
El Yagrumo pertenece al género Cecropia, con especies como Cecropia telenitida y Cecropia santanderensis, las mas conocidas en Los Andes, desde Venezuela hasta el Perú, localizadas entre 1400 y 2700 m s.n.m. así como la Cecropia peltata muy extendida en Venezuela.
Sin embargo, el Yagrumo no es exclusivo de la alta montaña; es un árbol representativo de la zona intertropical americana y se extiende desde México hasta América del Sur, siendo también común en tierras bajas con climas cálidos.
Esta especie crece hasta unos 25 m y tiene un diámetro cercano a los 60 cm .
La hoja es grisácea o plateada en el envés, color que se lo da una capa de pelillos que la cubre. Estos pelos brillan con la luz del sol y esto hace que donde hay bastantes árboles de esta especie se observen a distancia manchas blanquecinas dentro del bosque, las "canas de la montaña".
Los frutos del Yagrumo están dispuestos como racimos colgantes que parecen largos dedos. Estos frutos son consumidos por las Perezas, murciélagos, mono aullador, ardilla, loros, perdices y otras especies de aves.
Es importante saber que esta especie es lo que se llama una especie pionera de rápido crecimiento, que se establece en las áreas descubiertas dentro del bosque y las coloniza, pasando a formar parte del mismo. Esta propiedad de la especie la hace recomendable para la reforestación en áreas degradadas.
