Hello Guys ... How are you today ?
It turns out that not only do they dominate the foliage area, but they also often make nests in every hole in the breakwater rock wall on the beach.
If you look at the picture in post 2, you can see the grasshoppers are sitting still and looking relaxed on the breakwater wall which is up to 5 meters high, while behind it you can see several traditional Acehnese fishing boats resting. The traditional boats are also preparing materials for operational equipment for fishing activities. Materials in the form of food and others as necessities for tomorrow, in daily routines for fishing purposes.
The character is not like a grasshopper in a green plant
In general, when we approach a grasshopper that is perched on any branch of a plant, it will immediately walk the other way, to hide its body from our view. This is done solely to protect himself from all the predators who often hunt him, whoever visits him, he will immediately stay away.
However...
Unlike the characters who dominate this area, he looks relaxed when approaching him, at least we can approach him for 1 minute with a distance of about 30 cm, when we approach him he will detect every movement that comes from us, if it is considered that someone's presence is suspicious or dangerous then, he will fresh go on his way, or suddenly it will jump and walk over the wall, and into every small hole in the wall of the breakwater with a depth of about 50 cm
What causes this grasshopper to look relaxed and not worried?
That question is often discussed in every insect research team in our area, why?
This also stems from its relaxed behavior when approached by humans, unlike grasshoppers that dominate green areas. Changes in behavior originating from the locust area can be answered simply, because living here is very safe and has a very safe nest, coupled with the behavior of local residents who never disturb them, meaning that people here always ignore their existence, even though the number is increasing.
If you visit the area, or before approaching the breakwater wall, you will see several adult grasshoppers relaxing enjoying the beachside atmosphere, but unfortunately I don't have a high zoom camera, even if I take photos with my personal camera (smartphone), then it is not visible, because of its small size.
If he nests in a hole in the wall, then how does he find food?
Even though they nest and breed in rock breakwater holes, they are still out foraging in the wild leaves that grow near the great wall, the trees are wild plants that grow naturally on each edge. When they are hungry, each grasshopper will come out of its nest and then, in the wild, eat the leaves. If they are considered finished, they immediately return to their place (nest). So don't be surprised if you enter the afternoon or precisely when the sun is about to set, then you see it in large numbers on the breakwater wall.
Skin discoloration
Have you noticed the color of this grasshopper's skin?
If yes! Then you will see a slight difference in skin color, this grasshopper has a greenish yellow skin color mixed with red, while the grasshopper that dominates the green area has bright green and yellow leaves, the red universe is only slightly visible. This situation is influenced by the air temperature in this area, each wall of the breakwater has an average heat temperature, which is different from the temperature in green plants. Even in the heat, their bodies are protected by thick leaves, meaning they can hide in the shade of green plants.
The heat will also be absorbed by the stones in the nest during the day, even though it is night, their nest remains warm due to the absorption of the stones in the nest, and at night the warm temperature will be released back by the absorption of the stones and, then enjoyed again by every grasshopper in it.
A very smart and amazing thing about the behavior of this beach grasshopper, why? Because the warm temperature in the nest hole can accelerate the hatching of the eggs that are placed on the surface of their nest hole.
Another advantage is that the eggs are in a small cave location, protected from the touch of rain, and other conditions that slow or freeze eggs from birth by adult female locusts.
However, there is a drawback in that the small hole is 3 inches wide and 50 cm deep, with a long straight shape. The reason is, they can kill both their offspring and their mother if they don't detect the tide (full tide) because the big water drowns out every hole in the nest within 2 days and 2 nights.

The body size of a beach grasshopper nesting in a breakwater wall
When talking about the body size of an adult grasshopper, then this refers to the words of experts recorded in the biology book entitled Serangga dan Habitat, the latest edition in 2000, publisher erlangga. I quoted that explanation from page 25 with a social theme he said 'the size of an adult grasshopper in general has a length of 85 mm, while a width of about 8 mm, this size is specifically for female grasshoppers, while males are about 80 mm, meaning that the male locust's body is smaller than the grasshopper female.
While this coastal grasshopper has a larger body size than the grasshopper that dominates green land, the length is about 90 mm while the width reaches approximately 10 mm and sometimes there are even 12 mm (but rarely).
If measured with an estimate then when holding his body will feel full of adult human palms, and the pushing force of his feet is also very strong.
I personally see it very often, but at special times, or at sunset, it is very rarely seen above the wall (breakwater). However, today I found them standing and posing like artists when looking at the camera, the photos would be very beautiful if photographed from below, so their sexy bodies look like athletes against a background of red clouds.
Even more beautiful, when there are red clouds due to the reflection of Sunset in the afternoon, but unfortunately Sunset today is not visible because it is covered by thick clouds, so that some areas are dark and some areas are red.
By having a personal camera in the form of a VIVO Y 12 smartphone, I tried and tried some grasshopper poses and I shared them with my friends on this blog. If you like it, please provide input in the comments column provided.
Hope you enjoy this simple post.
