I was hoping for some flowers this year, but instead I just got a lot of leaves. Well mostly foliage, might have gotten 5 flowers. Over a few years though I expect them to mature more and form buds but for now they will just grow out taller, wider and with more leaves.
Around the time winter is ending, I start to see budding sites forming on the stalks of these plants. Normally they just look like little nubs, but over time they start to turn green and then leaves will pop out of them. Its all quite interesting to see, as each day there is new formations of leaves growing. I took some macro video of my Lapins sweet cherry tree when it was just starting to form leaves.
As the sun goes down on my property, the light shines through the leaves and gives them a lime green glow to them. Bringing my new camera outside I attached my macro lens and got to collecting video of this plant. All of these clips are from the video which can be found at the bottom of the post.
They are getting pretty tall as well, within just a few years they are already taller than I am.
More leaves are forming, soon enough they will extent into branches and make a canopy. One day the tree may provide enough foliage to make shade. But for right now they are all quite skinny and tall.
The pollen is quite extreme outside right now, it is covering the newly formed leaves. Little yellow specks can be seen on the leaves up close.
Not many flowers this year, I guess its still in a phase of growing. Maybe eventually it will be full of flowers but not this year.
I used a stake to make sure the plant grows straight up, the tree seems to be fine with that.
Wrapping the trunk around with some wire helps hold it in place.
The leaves are getting nice and big, should collect lots of light and produce the strength needed to flower and maybe fruit in the future.
My cherry trees are semi dwarf's so I hope they do not get too big. Surprised they are already taller than I am.
The bark is forming nicely as well, looking like a health cherry tree.
There are little red nodules that attract ants, this will protect the tree from pests. As the ants will harass anything that tries to cling to the tree.
Really loving these trees, and glad they are growing up nice and strong. As of right now I have a few kinds.. A minnie Royal, two lapins, and a black tatarian cherry tree. In addition to those I have two bush cherry's as well.
