I have been thinking that it would be good to have some positive news about environmental matters. used to post in this vein and I have done before. I am thinking of using the #GreenShoots tag for this.
I tend to get most of my news from The Guardian who have good environment coverage. I also read New Internationalist who cover stories from all over the world and listen to some science podcasts that can feature green issues.
Rewilding the UK despite official efforts
I just read about farmer Derek Gow in Devon who has been running his own rewilding projects for year. He has released thousands of water voles on his 120 hectare farm. More controversially he has released beaver that he obtained in Poland as he thinks they are 'creators of life'. He has introduced storks and plans to release wildcats. He feels that going through official channels for this takes too long and is very blunt with his opinions.

I used to see watervoles a lot when I went fishing as a child, but I understand they are much less common now. That is partly down to the number of mink around that have escaped or been released from fur farms.
Carpets from fishing nets
On BBC Radio's The Life Scientific I heard marine biologist Heather Koldewey talk about a scheme she helped set up to turn fishing nets into carpets, They are operating in the Philippines and Cameroon and have used hundreds of tons of nets so far that would otherwise be dumped, possibly in the sea. This also helps the local communities.
A phone that cares
Our hunger for new technology means we throw away millions of mobile phones and other devices every year, sometimes after just a few years of use. Fairphone aim to reduce the impact of this industry by producing devices that can be repaired and upgraded by users. They have introduced a new model with a better camera that can also be used in a previous model. They use recycled materials and get others from ethical sources. The review above admits that it may be lacking in the cutting edge technology of the latest top end phones, but you are paying partly to support a more ethical industry. They are not ridiculously expensive compared to what else is out there and they support the software for five years. I will consider one when I next need a new phone.
Over to you
Have you seen other good news about the environment? We hear so much about destruction and exploitation and we need hope. Everything we do has an impact, but we can reduce that by changing our habits, including what we spend our money on.
Stay well and look after the planet.
