Good morning dear Hive community
In summer, the Soča Valley is overflowing with tourists wanting to see its natural beauty and other attractions. As the temperatures can be particularly hot, everyone rushes to the Nadiža river, one of the cleanest and warmest rivers in the Alps. This, of course, discouraged us from visiting it before, so we prefer to see it in Autumn, when the river is resting.
We drove to a village near the river and took a circular route, visiting 3 different popular bathing spots. The river creates swimming pools in certain areas, otherwise is not deep enough for swimming. Besides jumping into the water, which is now quite cold in September, we prepared there as well some food and ate lunch.
We crossed the bridge and continued to the church of St. Volar, which reigns on a hill that is said to have been inhabited since the Bronze Age. The hill hides many rocky cliffs ideal for climbers. Before we reached the top, we washed our eyes with water flowing into a wooden basin, as is customary. This water is said to be very healing and, according to local stories, it cured all eye diseases and helped with visual impairment.
The river Nadiža is also said to be healing, and its special composition has a beneficial effect on all skin diseases and even relieves pain.
From the top of the church, you have an exceptionally beautiful view of a long hill that extends into neighboring Italy, called Stol. In the distance you can also see Krn, the highest mountain in the area.
In addition to the church, there is also a cave in the area, which the locals have given various names. It is said to have been a refuge for people in times of hardship, such as wars or natural disasters. Due to the lack of exploration in the area, the cave is almost forgotten, as only the locals know the way to it. We did not see a single signpost, so we decided to go back with someone who knew the area better.
We wish you a fantastic day 🙏🏽
