Pequeña interacción con una Boa Constrictor
Le ayudamos a liberarse de las garrapatas
Hello! A few days ago I shared this post about an iguana I found while looking for a snake in my backyard; well, now we found the snake. It is a baby Boa Constrictor, it was very hard to find because of its color, but the sound of the birds gave away her presence. I went with the camera to take as many photos as I could. It was sleeping in the middle of the orchids, I could see its body and tail, it's amazing how bright the colors are in the tail, it's easier to see than the rest of the body.
¡Hola! Hace unos días compartí este post sobre una iguana que encontré mientras buscaba una serpiente en mi patio; pues bien, ahora encontramos la serpiente. Es una Boa Constrictor bebé, fue muy difícil encontrarla por su color, pero el sonido de los pájaros delató su presencia. Fui con la cámara para sacar todas las fotos que pudiera. Estaba durmiendo en medio de las orquídeas, pude ver su cuerpo y cola, es increíble lo brillante que son los colores en la cola, es más fácil de ver que el resto del cuerpo.
After a few minutes of taking pictures, my sister noticed a tick on its head, so we called our dad to come to see it. A few years ago my dad kept throwing away a snake that kept coming back, then he noticed it had a tick, took it away, and let go of the snake, and she didn't come back that time so maybe it was just asking for help. For that reason, my sister thought my dad might help with this one too. You can see in the photos it is big, a meter at least, but still small and thin in comparison to how big it could get, so it's just a baby for us.
Después de unos minutos de tomar fotos, mi hermana se dio cuenta de que tenía una garrapata en la cabeza, así que llamamos a nuestro papá para que viniera a verla. Hace unos años mi papá tiraba una serpiente que no paraba de volver, entonces se dio cuenta de que tenía una garrapata, se la quitó y soltó a la serpiente, y esa vez no volvió, así que tal vez sólo estaba pidiendo ayuda. Por esa razón, mi hermana pensó que también podría ayudar con esta. Se puede ver en las fotos que es grande, un metro por lo menos, pero todavía pequeña y delgada en comparación con lo grande que podría llegar a ser, por lo que es sólo una bebé para nosotros.
My dad took it so he could take care of the tick we first saw on its head, he found out there were more, so we took them too, it was kind of hard, the snake was wiggling and the tick was big. You can see how damaging it was to its skin to have those there. After cleaning the area with water and a brush, we put some cream I bought for my cat to help it heal and try to prevent an infection. I don't speak snake but from its behavior, I imagine it understood we were helping.
Mi padre la agarró para poder ocuparse de la garrapata que vimos antes en su cabeza, descubrió que había más, así que también se las quitamos, fue un poco complicado, la serpiente se contoneaba y la garrapata era grande. Se puede ver lo malo que era para su piel tenerlas allí. Después de limpiar la zona con agua y un cepillo, le pusimos una crema que compré para mi gato para ayudarla a cicatrizar e intentar evitar una infección. No hablo serpiente pero por su comportamiento, imagino que entendió que le estábamos ayudando.
In the next shot, you can see it doesn't have big fangs. The teeth are retractile so there is more than what we are seeing, but they are all for grabbing and eating, this snake doesn't bite (well, it does, and the bacteria in its mouth is dangerous, but it's not venomous). This one is still small, it can get so big that if a car tries to run over it (yeah, people do it) it will flip the car like a toy.
En la siguiente toma se ve que no tiene grandes colmillos. Los dientes son retráctiles por lo que hay más de lo que estamos viendo, pero son todos para agarrar y comer, esta serpiente no muerde (bueno, lo hace, y las bacterias en su boca son peligrosas, pero no es venenosa). Esta aún es pequeña, puede llegar a ser tan grande que si un carro intenta atropellarla (sí, la gente lo hace) lo voltearía como si fuera un juguete.
In the end, we released it back to the wild, but way at the back of our backyard and not just a few steps away from where the tree with the orchids is. The birds stopped screaming, it got rid of the ticks, and as soon as it realized we were setting it free, it ran away to hide from predators, so everybody was happy. Now nature can continue.
Al final, la soltamos de nuevo en la naturaleza, pero muy al fondo de nuestro patio trasero y no a unos pasos de donde está el árbol con las orquídeas. Los pájaros dejaron de gritar, se deshizo de las garrapatas y, en cuanto se dio cuenta de que la liberábamos, huyó para esconderse de los depredadores, así que todos contentos. Ahora la naturaleza puede continuar.
We learned to be careful around snakes but not to fear them, also not to kill all of them. We only do it if it's a venomous snake that is being a threat, otherwise, if they are not venomous or even if they are but are not being aggressive or inside the house, we (my dad lol) just take it away from our house, back to the bushes.
Aprendimos a tener cuidado con las serpientes, pero no a tenerles miedo, ni a matarlas a todas. Sólo lo hacemos si se trata de una serpiente venenosa que representa una amenaza, de lo contrario, si no son venenosas o incluso si lo son pero no están siendo agresivas o dentro de la casa, nosotros (mi papá, lol) simplemente las alejamos de nuestra casa, de vuelta al monte.
