In this post I will tell you about life in the highlands in the province of North Sumatra, Indonesia, precisely in the Karo Regency. Karo Regency is located in the Bukit Barisan plateau, because it is in the highlands, Karo Regency has a cool climate, which is between 6-7 degrees Celsius.
In addition to its cool area, Karo is also famous for having very fertile soil, this is because in Karo Regency there are Mount Sibayak and Mount Sinabung, both mountains are still active, even today Mount Sinabung still emits volcanic ash. Karo Regency is one of the vegetable and fruit producing areas in North Sumatra Province. In addition, Karo Regency is also the largest flower producer in North Sumatra Province, a wide variety of flowers are planted by farmers in Karo Land, So when we visit Karo regency, we will find lots of fresh flower sellers on the roadside or at the market
Most of the vegetable commodities circulating in traditional markets in North Sumatra province come from Karo Regency. Some vegetables that are widely grown in Karo Regency are:
Potato
Potatoes are one of the vegetables that are widely grown by farmers in Karo Regency. Potato plants will grow well in cool climates, so farmers who live in mountainous areas grow lots of potatoes.
Cabbage
Cabbage is a vegetable that is widely grown in highlands. Apart from potatoes, farmers in Karo Regency also grow cabbage.
Green broccoli
Many people in the Karo highlands also grow green broccoli, broccoli plants will grow quickly in areas with a cool climate, therefore green broccoli is very suitable for planting in the highlands.
Tomatoes
residents also grow tomatoes,the price of tomatoes in North Sumatra province currently reaches 15,000 rupiah (USD.1.07), whereas the price of tomatoes is usually only 8000 rupiahs (USD.0.57), so the tomatoes currently circulating in the market are tomatoes. the young ones (picked before the red)
Chili
The type of chili that is widely grown by residents in the highlands is red chili, there are also farmers who grow cayenne pepper, but in general they plant red chilies. Besides in the highlands, chili is also widely grown by residents in lowland areas. The price of chili from the highlands is usually more expensive than chili grown in the lowlands, this is because chilies from the mountains have a spicier taste and also last longer when stored. Chili farmers usually plant chilies together with tomatoes, this is done to save fertilizer and also planting time
Coffee
In addition to vegetables, farmers also grow coffee as an annual crop in the highlands, so vegetables are a daily commodity and coffee plants are for annual savings (coffee usually begins to bear fruit at the age of 2 years and there is also one that begins to bear fruit at the age of 3 years, depending on type of coffee)
Sweet orange
one of the fruit commodities that are the mainstay of Karo Regency are sweet oranges, oranges with the best quality will be sent to Jakarta (the capital of Indonesia), sweet oranges originating from Karo Regency have a distinctive taste compared to other citrus producing areas), so that citrus farmers in Karo district is able to compete with other regions.
Other vegetables that are widely grown by farmers in the highlands are carrots, leeks, soup leaves, yams, Dutch eggplant and various other vegetables.
