Bienvenidos a mi blog de costura 🧵./Welcome to my sewing blog 🧵.
Good evening friends, I hope you're all doing well. It's been a few days since I've shared something I love to do: sewing. I've been busy with a few other things and hadn't gotten around to writing about my sewing projects lately. I've also been doing small alterations for some clients, until one of them asked me to make this simple open dress that she plans to wear with something underneath. It has buttons, but you can't see them in this case because she said she'd add them. Come along and let's make it; you'll be surprised how easy it is to sew.
Materiales: | Materials:
- Tela de popelina 50 cm roja y 1.20 cm de la estampada de polka
- Máquina de coser
- Tijera
- Medida como referencia o patrones (yo usé las medidas de mi clienta y procedí a cortar la tela)
- Cinta métrica
- Hilo y alfileres
- 50 cm of red poplin fabric and 1.20 cm of polka dot print fabric
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Measurements for reference or patterns (I used my client's measurements and proceeded to cut the fabric)
- Measuring tape
- Thread and pins

Paso 01
Step 01
Okay friends, first of all, as we can see, this design has tulip sleeves, so we'll cut four of these for the semi-curved sleeves, or as if you were cutting a butterfly sleeve but halfway. I cut two pieces of the front bodice for the buttons, and I cut a double piece of the back bodice, the bias, and the skirt, 1.60 cm wide x 1.10 cm long. These are the corresponding pieces to make the dress.
Paso 02
Step 02
Next, I proceeded to sew the darts of my dress. In this case, I started by making or sewing each dart of the front bodice. To mark exactly where the darts go, I simply folded each piece in half, made a small cut, and that's it. From that guide, we can mark the height of our dart. In this case, I made the front bodice darts 10 cm high, and with the back, we did the same: we marked the halfway point and the length of the dart, in this case, almost 13 cm for the back. Then I sewed the shoulders of the dress, that is, I joined both pieces. I sewed the edge with an overlock stitch; you can do it with a zigzag stitch and reinforce the seam with a straight stitch.
Paso 03
Step 03
At this point in the process, I've moved on to sewing what will be our sleeves. For this, I've taken two pieces to make one sleeve and placed them one on top of the other like petals meeting, leaving a small cavity in the center, as you can see in the first image. I'll use a pin to hold the sleeve pieces together and have overlocked the edge. I also made a small hem of less than 1 cm along the edge of the pieces. We do the same with the other pieces, and now it's time to attach this sleeve to the armhole. To position it, simply find the seam where the dress's bodice meets the shoulders, and in the sleeve cavity, we'll place the seam so that the two pieces of the sleeve meet.
Paso 04
Step 04
As a final step, we sew the entire edge of the skirt, including the hem for the buttons and buttonholes. Then, we attach the skirt to the red blouse, which has been previously sealed along the sides. We create small pleats, the width of the skirt. We calculate how many pleats we need and pin them in place. Once we're sure we have enough pleats, we sew them. Next, we sew the edge of the blouse using an overlock stitch. We continue sewing and make a 2.5 cm hem inward for the buttonholes. After that, we sew the bias tape, folding the end over, and sew from the inside out with a straight stitch. Finally, we hem the dress and finish it with the buttonholes so my client can attach the buttons at home when she takes the dress. I made a total of 11 buttonholes. 😍 With this, we complete this project.

This is how this pretty, simple, and delicate overcoat-style dress turned out. Honestly, the combination my client chose makes it look beautiful. I love this polka dot print fabric, especially for elegant dresses. I'm so glad my client chose it for this dress. What do you think? Have you made this style before? Let me know in the comments; I'll be happy to read them. That's all for today on this project. I hope to share more sewing projects with you soon, so stay tuned. I hope you enjoy yourselves and have a lovely night! ✨ Greetings to my fellow artisans! 🤗🥰
