It's official. Winter has descended upon us in Cape Town!
This time of year and I have a it of a love hate relationship. Well, it's certainly better than being all hot and sweaty, but it does get me thinking (as the rain pelts so hard against ur upstairs bedroom window that I think it might start raining in my bed!) - yet it does get me thinking that it's knitting time again!
So on Saturday morning, I shuffled through the puddles in my pajamas to go and buy some wool for my project! What crazy thing us crafty ladies get up to when we have that itch to create!?
It's actually the first time I've been on foot outside our gate in a long time. We live on a busy road, but in a quiet corner of the complex, quite far away from it. Weed is now legal in Cape Town, and there happens to be a shop right next to us! It's housed in what was some sort of abandoned block of flats that was sheltering some undesirable people doing very shady business, so I fully support this enterprise! The cannabis store shares the building wth a Pakistani grocery/snack shop, which I have yet to venture into, but smells DIVINE!
And of course, I was taking all of this in on my little pajama shuffle to the wool shop, which was my original mission. See? I haven't even smoked any weed, and I am already going off-plot 😂 - it does come full circle though, I promise!
So I have been plotting and planning to knit this scarf since the end of last winter, when I finished my own scarf. If you're new to this blog, I knit for anxiety but also to create love gifts for the special people in my life - to keep warm, those who keep me warm!
So, one of Aime's friends came to visit, and we have become such great friends over the last little while. The age gap seems massive, but in friendship, it is irrelevant. Anyway, I offered to knit him a scarf, and he wanted one just like mine!!
This delighted me so much as I was dying to work with this beautiful rainbow charity wool (of which a portion of the profit of the sale of this wool actually goes to charity!), but I didn't know when I'd find someone whose eyes lit up when they saw it.
That is how I choose my colours for my "heart scarves"you can see them all here. I have to see how people react to colour or know them well enough to be intuitive about the colour. Like the scarf I knitted for my Mother's Birthday. Each one is unique!
I definitely took another good look at the snack shop and the pot shop, and actually went inside! How novel it is that you can buy premium, ready-rolled joints and vapes of all strains and flavours! What a brave new world!
When I was a teenager, there was just always some shady guy who sold weed wrapped up in newspaper or in bank bags, all out of his school blazer!
What funny memories.
Anyway, as I toddled home, I thought to myself, "Well, that's a good plot actually! Buy some wool and some delicious snacks, get stoned out of your tree (but in your bed) and binge-watch Netflix with a hot water bottle!"
It's been almost 25 years, but guess what I'm doing tomorrow while the kids are out of the house? Teeehee! See you on the other side!
