This is my second attempt to create a good backpack and not the last as I'm not really satisfied with the result. The truth is I don't have all the tools this bag needs, I've tried to improvise but the result I got is not what I would want, so now I have to look for another solution. So today I'm going to show you where I am now and come back at a later time to show you the final result.
The first backpack was a zippered one, but I didn't like the design so much. This one should have been with a string and magnetic clap.
This is the video tutorial that helped me create this backpack.
As usual, I'm using a pair of jeans and a shirt, both bought from the second hand shop for about 0.5€
The big piece is a 28cm x 64.8cm piece. Next to it the two side pieces, pockets 14 cm x 16.7cm, and the pocket of the jeans as it looked nice and i thought it's good to use it.
Pockets
After applying the interfacing to the wrong side of the big piece, I had to sew the pocket in the middle, 12cm from the top.
While the front pocket was easy as I could use the original, the side pockets had to be created. For that I needed 2 pieces of 14cm x 21.6cm.
After folding and sewing the top, these are the two pieces I got. As you can see, I'm trying to use every piece, even though one piece has the shadow of the original pocket. I don't consider that a problem.
And there it is, the two pockets with the side pieces.
Last time I struggled a lot with these triangles that are connecting the straps to the backpack. This time it was easy. It helps a lot that my sewing machine is working well.
Straps And Flap
This backpack has a rounded flap closure that is working with a magnetic snap. This is the lining, 20.3cm x 20.3cm and the magnetic snap is already applied.
Here the interfacing is already applied and the flap and the lining is sewed together. Because this piece is round and needs to be turned inside out, I had to cut out small triangles in order to look good after turning it out.
It's the first time I'm working with this kind of flap but I must admit, this piece is a good one, I was pretty pleased with the result.
The next step was to sew the straps to the flap.
The shoulder straps are of 101.5cm x 7.5 cm with an interfacing of 99cm x 5cm.
The carry strap is of 23cm x 7.5cm with an interfacing of 20.5cm x 5xm.
Side triangles applied, the flap as well.
The next step was to sew the side pieces and the body together.
After that, the whole thing started to look like a real backpack.
Lining
As I mentioned above, for the lining I used a shirt, which was big enough to not create problems but because I was distracted, cut out a smaller piece and needed another one to get what I wanted. Yes, better pay attention next time, right?
This is why the lining looks like that. I don't have a problem with it as it makes it more interesting but it would have saved me from another 10 minute work.
This time instead of three pockets, I only made two as the backpack is smaller that the usual bag and already has three outer pockets. These two are big enough to carry two phones and even more.
After applying the string (122cm x 5cm) I had to realize that this solution is not good. The tutorial video is using rings, which is good but as I don't have what it needs, I had to improvise.
This is it for today and I promise to be back with the final solution in another post.
