Hello again, we continue to use Jeans. The truth is that since the last post, I was fascinated with the results it provides. At least for me, the resistance and longevity of each project is what makes me interested in them, so Jean is the perfect material for me 😊
Today I'm going to be making a two-color Jean mouth cover, with a wine-colored silk lining, a beauty..
The reason why I decided to make a face mask is because I believe that they are here to stay, the pandemic has left us with this culture that is somewhat unknown to Latinos and we must take advantage of it and not waste the momentum, nor reverse our evolution.
In other words, we must continue to take care of ourselves and use the face mask, for which we will need to feel comfortable with what we wear and try to combine it with the rest of our clothes, so that is why I want to make a face mask, to have variety to complement my day-to-day clothes 😊
We started the project, the ideal is to have this pattern that I am using, I will leave it at the end of the post, so that you can see the measurements, although I clarify from now, that it is a personalized pattern, which I made based on myself 😊
We are going to need 2 pieces of our pattern, in my case it is jean, but you can use any other fabric you have at home. The advice would be to pay attention to where we make the cut, so that the "pretty" part of the fabric is on the outside.
Then we join them together, on the thicker side and fold the edges.
Once we do the previous steps, it is important to test that everything is in place. With our hands we hold it in front of our face and with a mirror we see that there is neatness in the edges of both halves.
If we see that everything is fine, it is time to trim the excess from the edges and polish any stitches that did not turn out well. For now, we are going to put this piece aside, it is time to make the lining.
And yes, the jean is too rustic to use it as a mouth cover, so yes or yes, a lining is necessary.
And look what I have for the lining, a silk fabric, deep wine color... a beauty. I am not able to profane this with staples, for this I used pins 😂
We will simply make two more pieces of our pattern and join them like the previous one, although we will not touch the edges.
It is important not to touch the edges, because at this point, we will have to join both parts and we will do it by folding the edges inwards and joining edge to edge, that is, the edge of the lining and the corresponding edge of the outer part.
Here he did advise using staples, although they should be attached to the edge, just where we will pass the seam, so any small hole left by the staples will not be noticeable. Finally, it should be noted that I am using thread of the color corresponding to each half and making very small stitches so that it is not noticeable on the lining side.
Once we have the edges together, we must return to the stapler. Yes, I know that many do not like this method, but believe me that there is nothing easier.
And this time, I used it to mark the edge where I will put the elastic, which I had not folded until now. It is not like someone is going to start measuring each part to the millimeter, although the more neat the better. The idea is that both parts are symmetrical.
Once that is done, we can sew just around the edge, so there will be a cavity, where we will introduce the elastics later.
And speaking of elastics, the original idea was to use a black elastic cord, but unfortunately I couldn't find it in the store where I usually go and I had to improvise.
I used a piece of elastic fabric, from a sports short, I think it was. I simply made two folds on itself, cut and pass the respective seam.
Once I had my homemade elastic cord ready, it was time to pass it through the small opening I had left. To do this, I used a water, with which I hooked the cord and made it pass through the cavity that we made before.
Later, I measured, joined and cut the excess elastic. Now this here depends on how each person likes it, personally I left it a little tight, so that in a few days the elastic will have stretched and it will be perfect. I prefer that to be shortening it every 2 days, every time it loosens.
You will also notice that the union was quite rough, this was intentional, the idea is that that little knot that was left there, will fit under pressure in the opening and so when the time comes to change the elastic, there is no need to undo anything.
And that's it, we would already have a resistant and two-color mouth cover. Not to mention the striking inner lining, which, believe me, draws a lot of attention. I'm just writing this post while visiting a close relative's house and everyone was surprised to see it 😊
