Hello needleworkers all over the world!!
I am here this Monday to rock on with a very touching project and I intend to make you...cry from happiness!!
So, let's start...Once upon a time..
..my sister, Athina, (yes, the one who takes marvellous photos and she is also an Art Teacher), decided to make a project with her students!
She started by reading "The Quiltmaker's Gift" by Jeff Brumbeau (Author), Gail De Marcken (Illustrator), Gail de Marcken (Illustrator). In the book there is a generous quiltmaker that agrees to make a quilt for a greedy king but only under certain conditions, and she finally causes him to undergo a change of heart.
And after that she contacted with me to make two quilts from scraps and from upcycling kids' clothing! Her thought was to imitate the quiltmaker by making a quilt from fabric scraps and then give it to people in need.
So, we begun!
At first she cut 6 white blocks and the kids painted them with fabric paints in order for them to participate more in the process and create their own quilt blocks!!
As you can see the kids drew many things and they really enjoyed the process!
After that, I told her that the kids should bring to her one blouse each with specific dimensions or not less than 37cm x 37 cm.
After they brought their fabric clothing in school she told them to cut a few by marking with a hard paper with the specific dimension in order to see the process
The other blocks were edited by me. I use my plastic quiltmaker's tool and I added an extra hard board from the other side in order to have my preferable dimension
I put it on the blouses and marking all over..
and then I cut the blocks with my pair of fabric scissors
After I cut all the blocks...
Along with my sister, we placed them on the floor in order to find the most appropriate combination.
After we found the combination, I started sewing the blocks by taking one band of fabic blocks a time.
Then I took all the fabric bands and put it on the bed
And I pinned each band with the next one and I sewed them
After that I placed a white sheet on the back, then the batting and then the sewing blocks..
Here you can see an other photo of the placement of the three layers, the front, the batting and the white sheet last.
Then, as you can see, I put metal fastenings in every cross , where 4 fabric blocks meet, and then...
With my domestic computerised Brother CS600i I started sewing on the strips...!
And sewing....It took me 3 days to sew both quilts!!
But I really enjoyed it!
Here you can see the first quilt from upcycling blouses
And here is the second one, with an other colour combination
And after the quilting.... both quilts were brought to school!!
The kids were amazed by the outcome!!
They couldn't believe in their eyes that this quilt had been made by their own clothes!
And after that, they decided to give both quilts to an boarding school, as a true act of solidarity and selflessness.
I am more than happy for spending 5 days of my life in that project.
Motto of the project
"Live your life by showing love and making selfless actions"
So, have a nice NEEDLEWORKMONDAY!! How do you think of the project??
