Hello, my fellow needleworkers. I'm so excited to share my NYSC journey with you. I graduated from university early this year and as a graduate in my country, I am required to participate in the NYSC program.
For those who might be wondering what NYSC means National Youth Service Corp. NYSC is a one-year training program for all Nigerian graduates whether they are schooled abroad or in Nigeria before they enter the corporate world. Fresh graduates or those who graduated earlier but are below 30 years old who are yet to go for the program are obligated to serve the country for a year.
During this period, You can be assigned to any state in the country to serve, but guess what? they won't post you to states you have been to before, they will evilly post you to states you have not been to before, and sometimes you may not even understand their native language. It can be really stressful, most people will pay extra fees to redeploy to their preferred States.
The NYSC program includes a 3-week camping where you will undergo military training and it is done at the beginning of the NYSC program. In the camp, you are only allowed to wear white shorts and a white T-shirt throughout your stay.
I'm going to camp this month, so I decided to sew 2 extra white shorts because the camp is only going to provide me with 2 shorts for the whole 3 weeks and I don't want to risk running out of clean clothes.
I had to create little time to sew it because I have alot of pending works but I don't want to spend money on something I can make. Sewing this short was actually fun and I'm so happy I did.
THE PROCESS
Here is the best part: making these easy white shorts so keep on reading as I take you through the process.
Material needed:
White fabric
Elastic
Thread
I cut the shorts. I want the shorts to be a little baggy, so I used 28 inches as the tight measurement and 17 inches for the length
I joined the crotch part
I then cut the pocket and added facing to it, then joined it together.
I measure 1inch down and add the pocket
I joined all the remaining parts of the shorts.
The band is 2 inches on the fold. I sew 0.75 inches at the top
And then 1 inch for the elastic.
I sewed the band to the waist
I folded the hem two inches inside
I overlocked and ironed for a nice finish and voila!
Here is a picture of me wearing the shorts
I think the short is cute and I'm hopefully going to sew more. I don't know yet but if time permits me I will.
I hope you enjoy reading this blog.
Thank you for reading and have a fabulous week 💕
