Origin Story
I am always in for a challenge. My phone time is usually chatting in discord with my friends, and then browsing through Pinterest, Etsy, and Facebook groups, looking for a challenging project every now and then.
That innocent question that I took as a challenge turned out to be a really cute amigurumi keychain.
What is amigurumi?
The word is a portmanteau of two Japanese terms: ami, which means crocheted or knitted; and nuigurumi, a stuffed doll.

My Little Shroomy
I usually post about my projects on Hive first, then on my other socmed next. But my excitement could not be contained. If this cuteness is right in front of you, I'm sure you'll also give in to the urge to show it off to the world.
My friend was considerate enough to give me a pattern. Though Shroomy is not exactly the same as the one in the pattern my friend sent. I have the tendency to workaround patterns when I couldn't recreate what it says in it.
Starting Up
As always, when creating an amigurumi, the first few rows do not always make any semblance of the item you are trying to create. It's fine. Just continue. Keep going.
A word of advice though, don't forget to use markers. Amigurumis, especially the ones that use continuous circles are nasty little devils. You'd think they're cute and lovely but they demand attention. They demand markers. If you're the daredevil type and finds fun in challenging the norm, then go ahead, don't use markers.
As for me, I like watching Titans on Netflix while crocheting. I did try not to use markers at first but it just takes one heated fight scene to confuse the shit out of me.
Feeding Little Shroomy
All of my previous projects left me with a lot of leftover yarn too small to even make a chain. Those have been used as fillings for my other amigurumi projects, along with fabric scraps from our old clothes.
After doing general cleaning, I found unused pillows in our storage cabinet. Since I wanted Shroomy to be cute and lovely, I cut open a pillow and used the fiber filling to feed her. Looks like she loved it!
The Sneak up
I usually don't mind the "lights out time" at home but I couldn't let go of Little Shroomy until she's all fed and stitched together. So, like a rebellious teenager, I snuck up at 2 AM and worked under the light of a desk lamp just to complete her.
What can I do? My mind wouldn't shut off all the excitement I feel. It's not every day I feel this level of excitement and inspiration and when I do, I usually don't sleep until I'm done.
Photo Op
A project isn't complete without the process shots. I'd have wanted to use a sophisticated lightbox for Shroomy, but then again, I couldn't. I tried making a DIY lightbox but my daughter mistook it as her toy, thus the early destruction of the said lightbox.
Oh well, I can still improvise. What can you say about my lightbox? Pretty nifty, ain't it?
The mushroom series
For sure, I will be working on some more mushroom keychain. Especially now that my friend is looking for someone who will invest in the mushroom keychain business. As it turns out, I have a lot of friends who loves mushroom. I can understand. Who wouldn't love a fungi? Get it?
As of writing, I am working on Shroomy's chubby friend. Being a prototype, she still has a lot of work that needs to be done. Shroomy showed a lot of lessons learned. But to me, Shroomy is my perfectly imperfect mushroom keychain prototype.
