The above image is from a yarn store that recently opened in my city. It is really convenient for needle workers like me. Up till now, the only way to buy yarn was to either buy it from stores in the metros or order online. There used to be small balls of wool that were sold in malls like Lulu but that was mainly for school projects and the like.
It is understandable because my state is always humid and it won't make sense to wear woolen clothes and so on but the recent craze to learn crochet by the young people have made shopkeepers to start thinking about selling yarn and needle work accessories.
It is a good sign that young people are learning to crochet and knit because it means less screen time. If only they made it a compulsory project at school. I myself learned it when I was a child. My aunt taught me to crochet and my mom taught me knitting. I had an ongoing interest but chores got in the way. I did take up knitting and learned how to knit a sweater because of you tube tutorials and AI. Honestly, AI did help me a lot in explaining how to knit a top down raglan sweater. The calculations are complex and I would never have done it by myself.
A few things to note if you take up knitting
- Always knit a swatch before you start knitting
- Make sure to calculate the number of balls of yarn you need
- Take breaks in between to rest your eyes and hands
- Write down instructions
- Write down your progress each day on a notebook
- Always measure when needed
- Use stitch markers
- Use a row counter or write down the number of rows
- You need not always undo rows to correct a mistake. You can use a crochet hook
- Never get distracted when doing needlework
- Use the right yarn and needle for the project
There are a lot of free patterns on Ravelry that you can use to create different projects.
You tube also has a lot of tutorials for different projects.
