Hello to everyone in this community and fellow sewing enthusiasts! Since it's the holiday season, I'll show you one of my few projects for the occasion: Christmas bags. To be honest, I hadn't planned on making anything Christmas-related, because I have so many projects in mind and in progress, but after one of my clients asked if I would make Christmas bags, my creative spirit kicked in and I ended up making three bags to satisfy that wish, hehe. By the way, 
Okay, let's do the following: I'll explain how I made a small bag in its entirety, and then I'll show you only the technique for decorating what would be the front flap of the bag, since that's basically the only thing that varies in each one 😉 Now then, let's begin with the first design.
✨ Front pieces of the bags cut ✨
☃️❄️ Small bag with printed fabric 🌟🎄
The first option is the simplest and least complicated, because if you have Christmas-themed printed fabric, you just need to cut the front and back flaps from it. In my case, since I only had scraps of fabric, I had to resort to patching the printed fabric, which allowed me to create a curious design. Although the printed fabric alone looked nice, I decided to add lace and gold bias tape to the seam to make it more eye-catching.
The fun part is that we can keep adding details, even if the fabric is patterned. With that in mind, I decided to hand-sew some sequins and beads to make the pattern even more charming. This way, with a few materials and some ingenuity, you can create something amazing with just a few scraps, not to mention it's a great way to de-stress or pass the time.
This type of bag requires two panels: a front and a back. Both can be cut from patterned fabric to speed up the process. I opted to use scraps of another fabric for the back. The two panels are joined with a straight seam and a reinforcing seam all around the edge.
At first, I thought the bag would close with drawstrings, but I discarded that idea and ended up using a 20cm clasp. To create a top flap, I cut two rectangles from fabric and two more from lining, roughly the length of the clasp. I then sewed these strips of fabric together, so the lining fabric was on the bottom, and finished the edges with a straight stitch. Since the clasp was rather small, I added a couple of extra rectangles to the sides; this lengthened the flap slightly and concealed the metal ends of the clasp.
As for the handle, for this type of bag, it's rather long. I cut a strip 80 cm long and 6 cm wide, which I folded and sewed. Once it was ready, I sewed it to the sides of the outer piece of the bag (the seam where the printed pieces meet), following the existing stitching.
The next step was to sew the flap I made with the zipper all around the edge of the outer piece of the bag.
To create a "base" effect on the bag, I sewed a seam at the corners. In these cases, you can add a piece of thick interfacing to stiffen that part of the bag, but since I didn't have any, I left it like that, haha.
I cut a couple of flaps from the lining, which I sewed and then attached to the top of the outer piece of the bag, leaving an opening to turn it inside out. Once this was done, I proceeded to close the opening with a hand stitch.
And just like that, the little bag with the Christmas print fabric was finished. The great thing about printed fabric is that the print itself is the main focus ☃️❄️🌟
☃️❄️ Embroidered Handbag 🌟🎄
As I mentioned, the process for making each handbag is the same, so I'll only explain how to decorate the flaps. For the embroidery, it's a simple design created using our sewing machine. One of my clients wanted a handbag featuring the character The Grinch, so I thought I'd try embroidering his face onto a piece of green plush fabric that I cut for the flap. First, I drew the design on a sheet of paper and then transferred it to the fabric using carbon paper.
I cut some pieces of yellow fabric to make the eye and sewed it on with a small zigzag stitch. The rest was outlining with a closed straight stitch and filling in the black spaces with the zigzag stitch. At first, it might seem a bit complicated, but you gradually get the hang of it, as it's about manipulating the fabric as you like, making sure to fill every empty space. I must say, I love how the embroidery turned out. It's not perfect, but I think it looks quite nice.
With our embroidered front flap, the rest is assembling the bag as I explained above. As you can see, with simple designs, we can create unique pieces with embroidery done on a home sewing machine ☃️❄️🌟
☃️❄️ Patchwork Bag 🌟🎄
Finally, we have a perfect technique for when we don't have enough material and only have scraps of fabric available. Basically, it involves joining those scraps of fabric to form something. I find this sewing technique beautiful, as it not only encourages recycling but also, I think, helps to awaken our creativity, since we never know what wonderful figure we might end up creating.
So, we started by creating the front flap with various scraps of fabric. In my case, I only had these green and red scraps, so I managed to make an interesting combination with other scraps of striped fabric—a festive combination!
But the patchwork didn't end there, because I wanted to create a Christmas figure, whether it was Santa, a reindeer, a gingerbread man, a tree, or a snowman. I decided to start with the latter and cut out pieces that I could use: the head, the hat, the nose, and the scarf; as well as putting together other materials to make the details.
I started creating the scarf by sewing two tubes of fabric, inside one of which I placed some pieces of yarn to create the effect of frayed edges at the ends of the scarf.
The rest was putting the pieces together like a puzzle and sewing them with a zigzag stitch, as well as making some details with a straight stitch, such as the lines on the carrot nose or to make the snowman's mouth.
Initially, I was going to make the eyes with scraps of fabric, but I changed my mind and sewed on a couple of buttons. The same goes for the pom-pom on the hat, which I ended up making with yarn.
With this wonderful technique, we can create any figure we want, and once we follow the instructions to make the rest of the bag, we'll have a unique piece. Even a simple change, like the fabric pattern or the accessories on the snowman, can make it look completely different ☃️❄️🌟
I had planned to split this information into three posts to avoid making this one too long, but I decided to do it this way since I have other things to share and didn't want them to pile up, haha. I hope this serves as a guide if you'd like to make simple bags with any design, regardless of the time of year. As you can see, they turn out quite original 🌟

¡Hola a todos los integrantes de esta comunidad y amantes de la costura! Aprovechando que ya estamos en época navideña, les enseñaré uno de mis pocos proyectos que hice para la fecha: Bolsitos navideños. La verdad, no tenía pensado hacer nada alusivo a la navidad, porque tengo muchos proyectos en mente y en proceso, pero luego de que una de mis clientas me preguntó que si haría bolsitos navideños, mi espíritu creativo se activó y acabé haciendo tres bolsitos para satisfacer ese deseo jeje Por cierto
Bien, vamos a hacer lo siguiente: Explicaré cómo hice un bolsito en su totalidad y luego, les mostraré únicamente la técnica para adornar lo que sería la tapa delantera del bolso, ya que básicamente es lo único que varía en cada uno 😉 Ahora sí, comencemos con el primer diseño.
✨ Piezas delanteras de los bolsos cortadas ✨
☃️❄️ Bolsito con tela estampada 🌟🎄
La primera opción es la que considero más sencilla y sin tanta complicación, pues si tenemos tela estampada navideña, bastará con cortar la tapa delantera y trasera con la tela estampada. En mi caso, como no tenía más que trocitos de tela, tuve que recurrir a hacer un empate de tela estampada, lo cual, me permitió crear un curioso diseño. Aunque sólo la tela estampada se veía lindo, se me ocurrió anexarle encaje y sesgo dorado en la zona de la unión, para darle mayor vistosidad.
La parte divertida es que podemos seguir añadiendo detalles, aún si la tela es estampada. Pensando en ello, se me ocurrió coserle a mano algunas lentejuelas y mostacillas, para hacer el diseño del estampado más encantador. De esta forma, con algunos materiales e ingenio, se puede lograr algo increíble con trocitos, sin mencionar que es una buena actividad para desestresarse o pasar el rato.
Para éste tipo de bolso se necesitan dos tapas: Delantera y trasera. Se pueden cortar ambas de tela estampada para agilizar el proceso. Yo opté por utilizar unos trozos de otra tela para la parte trasera. Se unen ambas tapas con una costura recta y otra costura de seguridad por todo el borde.
Al principio, pensaba en que el bolso se cerrase con unos cordones, pero descarté la idea y acabé usando un cierre de 20 cm. Para crear una tapa superior, corté dos rectángulos en tela y otros dos en forro, más o menos del largo del cierre. Procedí a coser estas tiras de tela, de forma que quedase la tela de forro en la parte inferior y definí con una costura recta. Como el cierre era algo pequeño, anexé un par de rectángulos extras en los laterales; de esa forma, se alargaría un poco la tapa y se ocultaría los extremos metálicos del cierre.
En cuanto al asa, para éste tipo de bolso, es algo larga. Corté una tira de 80 cm de largo y 6 cm de largo, la cual doblé y cosí. Tras tenerla lista, la cosí en los laterales de la pieza externa del bolso (la unión de las piezas estampadas), guiándome por la costura.
Lo siguiente fue coser la tapa que elaboré con el cierre por todo el borde de la pieza externa del bolso.
Con el fin de generar un efecto "base" en el bolso, hice una costura en las esquinas del bolso. En estos casos, se puede colocar un trozo de entretela gruesa para darle dureza a esa parte del bolso, pero como no tenía, lo dejé así jaja.
Corté en forro un par de tapas que cosí y luego anexé en la parte superior de la pieza externa del bolso, dejando una abertura para poder voltearlo y una vez hecho esto, procedí a cerrar dicha abertura con una costura a mano.
Y de esta forma, el bolsito con tela estampada navideña estuvo listo. Lo bueno de la tela estampada, es que el estampado, es precisamente el foco principal ☃️❄️🌟
☃️❄️ Bolsito con Bordado 🌟🎄
Como comenté, el proceso de elaboración de cada bolso es el mismo, así que sólo explicaré el decorado de las tapas. En el caso del bordado, se trata de hacer un diseño sencillo de bordado utilizando nuestra máquina de coser. Una de mis clientas, deseaba un bolso del personaje El Grinch, así que pensé que podría hacer el intento de bordar su rostro sobre un trozo de tela peluche verde que corté para la tapa. Primero, hice el dibujo en una hoja de papel y luego, los transferí a la tela usando papel carbón.
Corté unas piezas en tela amarilla para hacer el ojo y lo cosí con una costura en zig zag pequeña. El resto, fue delinear con una costura recta cerrada y rellenar los espacios en negro con la costura en zigzag. Al principio puede sentirse como algo complicado, pero poco a poco le vas agarrando el truco, pues se trata de manipular la tela a nuestro antojo, procurando llenar cada espacio vacío. Debo decir que me encanta cómo quedan los bordados. No son perfectos, no obstante, opino que quedan bastante lindos.
Teniendo nuestra tapa delantera bordada, el resto es armar el bolso como expliqué arriba. Como pueden ver, con diseños sencillos, podemos tener piezas únicas con bordados hechos con una máquina casera ☃️❄️🌟
☃️❄️ Bolsito con técnica Patchwork 🌟🎄
Para finalizar, tenemos una técnica perfecta para cuando no tenemos suficiente material y sólo disponemos de trocitos de tela, pues básicamente, se trata de unir esos trozos de tela para formar algo. Esta técnica de costura me parece preciosa, pues no sólo fomenta el reciclaje, sino que también, creo que ayuda despertar nuestra creatividad, pues no sabemos qué maravillosa figura podremos terminar armando.
Así que, comenzamos creando la tapa delantera con trocitos de tela variadas. En mi caso, no tenía más que esos trocitos de verde y rojo, así que logré hacer una combinación interesante con otros trocitos de tela con estampado de rayas ¡Una combinación navideña!
Pero, ahí no acaba el Patchwork, pues yo deseaba crear una figura navideña, ya fuese de un santa, un reno, una galleta de jengibre, un árbol o un hombre de nieve. Decidí comenzar por éste último y corté piezas que pudieran servirme: La cabeza, el gorro, la nariz y la bufanda; así como juntando otros materiales para hacer los detalles.
Comencé creando la bufanda, cosiendo dos tubos de tela, dentro de uno de los cuales, coloqué unos trocitos de estambre, para hacer la mención de unos bordes deshilachados a los extremos de la bufanda.
El resto, fue unir las piezas como un rompecabezas e irlas cosiendo con una costura en zigzag, así como haciendo uno que otro detalle con costura recta, como las líneas en la nariz de zanahoria o para hacer la boca del hombre de nieve.
Inicialmente, iba a realizarle los ojos con trocitos de tela, pero cambié de opinión y le cosí un par de botones. Lo mismo con el pompón del gorro, el cual acabé haciendo con estambre.
Con ésta maravillosa técnica podemos armar la figura que queramos y una vez que sigamos las indicaciones para hacer el resto del bolso, tendremos una pieza única. Inclusive, un simple cambio como el estampado de las telas o los accesorios en el hombre de nieve, puede hacerlo ver diferente ☃️❄️🌟
Había pensado distribuir esta información en 3 posts para no hacer esta publicación tan extensa, pero al final decidí hacerlo de este modo, ya que tengo otras cosas para mostrar y no quería que se me acumulasen más jaja Espero que les sirva de guía por si desean elaborar bolsitos sencillos con cualquier diseño, independientemente de la época del año.
