Hello to all members of this community and sewing enthusiasts! Last week I showed you how to make sleep masks, and this time I'd like to teach you one of the techniques I use to decorate them: embroidery. With a home sewing machine, you can create beautiful embroidery without needing an embroidery hoop (I once tried using one and broke out in a cold sweat; I need more practice, haha).
Okay, the first thing you need to do is cut out the mask pieces and, most importantly, have a design you want to create (a cat, eyes, shapes). In this case, I'll show you how I embroidered the character Derpy, the tiger from the movie K-Pop Warriors. For this specific design, I first sketched it on a piece of paper and transferred it to the fabric using carbon paper. I also cut out the shapes for the eyes and nose, since I prefer to make the larger parts with fabric rather than just thread.
The next step is to sew the fabric pieces of our design together. It's best to use a small zigzag stitch and make sure the thread matches the fabric color as closely as possible. Once that's done, you can add details like lines, using a combination of straight stitches to outline the shape and zigzag stitches to fill it in. This is how I made the character's eyebrows: first drawing the outline and then filling them in. The advantage of not using an embroidery hoop is that the feed dogs of the sewing machine provide more stability when moving the fabric, but you still need to keep moving the fabric and not stay in one place for too long to avoid creating a knot. I recommend going slowly at first and focusing on filling in each section with thread.
Once the embroidery is finished, the next step is to assemble the sleep mask as shown in the post. I think the result is quite cute.
For a mask I made based on Betty Boop, the procedure was the same: I transferred the design onto the fabric, sewed the fabric pieces for the larger areas, and then filled in the rest with a stitch. In this case, I used a closed straight stitch that my sewing machine has (I don't know what it's called, but this type of decorative stitch creates a kind of backstitch and looks quite dense).
But if we don't feel confident enough, we can start with simple designs. I think the Frida Kahlo design is one of them, since all you need to do is cut a piece of fabric for the unibrow and, after sewing it on, embroider closed eyelids with a few eyelashes. The detail of the handmade flowers enhances what appears to be a simple design, in my opinion.
As you can see, these masks are much more elaborate and eye-catching than the previous ones. I was really looking forward to making these designs with the embroidery technique, and I'm quite pleased with the result. I'd love to create other characters and figures, so I hope to show them to you as I progress with this sewing technique using the sewing machine, and of course, someday I'll try it with an embroidery hoop, haha.

¡Hola a todos los integrantes de esta comunidad y amantes de la costura! La semana pasada les mostré cómo hacer antifaces para dormir y en ésta oportunidad, me gustaría enseñarles una de las técnicas que utilizo para decorar los mismos: El bordado. Con la máquina de coser casera, se pueden obtener lindos bordados, sin necesidad de usar el aro para bordar (una vez bordé utilizando el aro y sudé frío, necesito practicar más jaja).
Muy bien, lo primero que se necesita es cortar las piezas del antifaz y sobre todo, tener un diseño que se quiera realizar (un gato, ojos, figuras). En éste caso, les mostraré cómo le hice para bordar al personaje Derpy, el tigre que aparece en la película Las guerreras del Kpop. Para éste diseño en específico, yo primero realicé un dibujo sobre un trozo de hoja de cómo sería y lo trasladé a la tela utilizando papel carbón; adicional a ello, corté lo que eran las figuras para armar los ojos y la nariz, ya que las partes grandes, prefiero hacerlas con tela en lugar de sólo hilo.
Lo siguiente a realizar, es coser los trozos de tela de nuestro diseño. Lo mejor, es utilizar una costura pequeña en zigzag y procurar que el hilo sea el más parecido al tono de la tela. Una vez hecho esto, se pueden realizar detalles como líneas, con una mezcla entre costura recta para delimitar la figura y zigzag, para rellenar la misma. De esta forma, realicé las cejas del personaje: Dibujando la silueta de las cejas primero y después, rellenando las mismas. Lo bueno de no usar el aro de bordar, es que los dientes de la máquina de coser te dan más seguridad a la hora de mover la pieza, pero hay que mover la tela y no quedarse mucho tiempo en un sólo lugar para evitar hacer un nudo. Recomiendo ir despacio al principio y enfocarse en rellenar cada trocito con el hilo.
Al tener el bordado listo, lo siguiente será armar el antifaz como se muestra en la publicación, considero que el resultado es bastante lindo.
Para un antifaz que hice basado en Betty Boop, el procedimiento fue el mismo: Trasladé sobre la tela el diseño, cosí los trocitos de tela de las partes más grandes y luego con costura, me encargué de rellenar el resto. En éste caso, una costura recta cerrada que trae mi máquina de coser (no sé como se llama, pero este tipo de costura decorativa hace como un retroceso y se ve bastante tupida).
Pero si no nos sentimos con la suficiente confianza, podemos comenzar con diseños sencillos. Considero que el Frida Kahlo lo es, pues basta con cortar un trozo de tela para la uniceja y tras coserla, podemos bordar unos parpados cerrados con algunas pestañas. El detalle de las flores hechas a mano, realza lo que aparenta ser un diseño sencillo, a mi parecer.
Como pueden apreciar, este tipo de antifaces se ven mucho más elaborados y llamativos que los que anteriores. Tenía muchísimas ganas de hacer estos diseños con la técnica de bordado y quedé bastante satisfecha con el resultado. Me gustaría poder elaborar otros personajes y figuras, así que espero mostrárselas en mis avances en ésta técnica de costura con la máquina de coser y por supuesto, algún día será utilizando el aro de bordar jaja.
