Hello to everyone in this community and fellow sewing enthusiasts! I'm so excited to share my first commission for a plushie after years of relaunching my online shop, Suecitos. It was a special occasion because I started casually sewing plushies long before I learned how to use a sewing machine (back then, I made them by hand with no real sewing knowledge 😅). I even had a few plushie orders before switching to sewing other things for other people and giving up on that type of sewing altogether 😓.
The girl, who had already asked me to do other things, asked me to make her a Goku doll, the protagonist of the anime Dragon Ball, in a chibi version—that is, a small and adorable version of the character. Since I hadn't made plushies in years, I didn't know where to start, haha, so I first made a sketch of what the doll would look like and then traced the pieces to use as my pattern. Next, I cut all the pieces out of fabric. Luckily, I had some light skin-colored stretch fabric, which was perfect for the project.
When I switched to the sewing machine, I first focused on embroidering the face. This was the most important part for me, since previously I used to make faces with fabric paint, felt pieces, or by hand embroidery. But this time, I wanted to embroider the face with my sewing machine, taking advantage of the fact that I'd been practicing that method. For this, I used a piece of white POP fabric, which is a stiff material often used as a backing for embroidery. I placed the POP fabric under the face fabric and began sewing the eye pieces (a couple of small white pieces) with a size 1 zigzag stitch.
The rest was outlining with a straight stitch on the machine and filling it in with a zigzag stitch, adjusting the size depending on the areas I wanted to cover. I must confess that I loved the result, and it's what motivated me to continue with the plushie, because if I hadn't gotten the face right, I wouldn't have continued, haha.
Next, I sewed the pieces for the legs, arms, and ears, turning them right side out and stuffing them. As you can see, the character's hands and feet look like those of "The Powerpuff Girls"—that is, without fingers, haha. It's the easiest way to do it with such small pieces, since the doll will be about 20 cm tall.
Next, I sewed a piece that we could call the "chin" of the plushie, which gives it a more rounded shape and provides space to sew the neck to the head. I also sewed the ears to the head, as well as the legs and arms to the base of the body (I forgot to take pictures of this part; it happens when I get too focused 😅). Once that was done, I was able to stuff the body and sew it to the head by hand, also taking the opportunity to add a small tag with my brand's initial 😌
With the body finished, it was time for another crucial part: the hair. Previously, for such extravagant hairstyles, I used felt. Its rigid nature allowed me to create fringes regardless of their shape. However, since I didn't have any felt, I had to improvise with a stiff black fabric (I think it was gabardine). Once I sewed the shape onto the fabric, I attached it to the plushie using liquid silicone and reinforced it with hand stitching. It was definitely a decent result, so I'll use this method for making hair in the future ✨
Next, I focused on the clothes. Believe it or not, it was the part I was least worried about, haha. It's about making miniature clothes, and I'm not exactly an expert at sewing, but knowing the basics makes dressing plushies not so complicated (depending on the outfit, of course). In Goku's case, it was a single piece (shirt and pants combined), separated by a sash at the waist; shoes, as well as wristbands.
First of all, I tried to make the logo that Goku has on his shirt, embroidering the word by hand... it turned out okay, I'm not complaining, it was very small and the stitches ended up coming together haha. Then, I sewed this little piece onto the garment and started adding some details that referenced the undershirt Goku wears, leaving it open at one shoulder. For the shoes, I opted for a "sack" style, decorating them with stitching. Finally, I sewed a strip to use at the waist and to make wristbands.
And so, Goku's fighting outfit was ready! ✨ I love doll clothes because they look so adorable when they're so small 😍
The next step was to dress the character, hand-sewing the shoulder area where it had been left open (that's where the character enters), as well as placing the ribbon at the waist and wrists and putting silicone on the shoes so that they would not fall off.
The result even surprised me, because it's not that I lack confidence in my abilities (actually... I do have some doubts, even though I've been sewing for years, haha), but since I hadn't made plushies in ages, as I mentioned, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to achieve a satisfactory result. I'm glad that despite my fear and doubts, I persevered with the project and didn't give up, even though there were moments when doubt crept in during the sewing.
The client, of course, was delighted and even wants me to make more plushies 😊 For my part, I hope to open plushie commissions as such, after practicing a bit more with small plushies that catch my eye. After all, with this project, I gained the confidence I needed to get back to doing something I truly love within the wonderful world of sewing 💕🧵✂️

¡Hola a todos los integrantes de esta comunidad y amantes de la costura! En esta oportunidad, vengo muy alegre a mostrarles lo que sería mi primera comisión para hacer un peluche, luego de años de retomar mi tienda virtual Suecitos. Fue algo especial, porque yo comencé cosiendo casualmente peluches mucho antes de aprender a usar la máquina de coser (en ese tiempo, los realizaba con costura a mano y sin conocimiento como tal de costura 😅) y llegué a tener algunos encargos de peluches, antes de dedicarme a coser otras cosas para otras personas y abandonar ese tipo de costura como tal 😓.
La chica, que ya me había mandado a hacer otras cosas, me pidió que le realizase un muñeco de Goku, el protagonista del anime Dragon Ball, en una versión chibi, es decir, una versión pequeña y adorable del personaje. Como tenía años sin realizar peluches, no sabía por donde empezar jaja por lo que realicé primero un boceto de lo que sería el muñeco y luego, saqué las piezas para que fueran mi patrón. Seguidamente, corté en tela todas las piezas. Por suerte, tenía tela licrada de color piel clara, la cual era perfecta para el proyecto.
Al pasar a la máquina de coser, primero me enfoqué en bordar el rostro. Esta era la parte más importante para mí, ya que anteriormente, solía hacer los rostros con pintura de tela, con trozos de fieltro o bordando a mano. Pero, en ésta ocasión deseaba bordar el rostro con mi máquina de coser, aprovechando que he estado practicando un poco esa forma. Para ello, utilicé un trozo de POP de color blanco, la cual es una tela rígida que se suele usar como soporte para los bordados. Coloqué el trozo de POP debajo de la tela del rostro y comencé cosiendo las piezas de los ojos (un par de trocitos de color blanco), con una costura en zigzag en tamaño 1.
El resto, fue delinear con la máquina con costura recta y rellenar con zigzag, graduando el tamaño dependiendo de los espacios que deseaba abarcar. Debo confesar que amé el resultado y fue lo que me motivó a continuar con el peluche, porque si no me salía la cara no lo iba a continuar jaja.
Luego, cosí las piezas correspondientes a las piernas, brazos y orejas, volteándolas y rellenándolas con relleno. Como pueden ver, las manos y pies del personaje lucen como los de "Las Chicas Superpoderosas", es decir, sin dedos jaja es lo más sencillo para piezas tan pequeñas, pues el muñeco sería de unos 20 cm de altura.
Después, cosí una pieza que podríamos llamar como la "barbilla", del peluche y que permite darle una forma más redondeada, así como tener espacio para coser el cuello a la cabeza. También, cosí las orejas a la cabeza, así como las piernas y brazos a la base del cuerpo (se me olvidó tomar fotos en esta parte, sucede cuando me concentro demasiado 😅). Una vez hecho esto, pude rellenar el cuerpo y coser el mismo a la cabeza, a través de una costura a mano, aprovechando también de poner una pequeña etiqueta con la inicial de mi marca 😌
Al tener el cuerpo listo, tocaba otra parte crucial: El cabello. Anteriormente, para peinados tan extravagantes, solía utilizar fieltro, dada su naturaleza rígida, me permitía elaborar flecos sin importar su forma. Sin embargo, como no tenía fieltro, tuve que improvisar con una tela rígida de color negro (creo que era Gabardina). Una vez que cosí la forma en la tela, la coloqué en el peluche utilizando silicón líquido y reforzando con una costura a mano. Sin duda, fue un resultado decente, por lo que lo usaré éste método para hacer cabello en un futuro ✨
Lo siguiente, fue enfocarme en la ropa. Aunque no lo crean, era la parte que menos me preocupaba jaja pues, se trata de hacer ropa en miniatura y no es que sea experta cosiendo ropa, pero sabiendo lo básico, no se hace tan complicado vestir peluches (dependiendo de cómo sea la vestimenta, claro está). En el caso de Goku, se trataba de una pieza completa (unión de camisa y pantalón), separado por una cinta en la cintura; los zapatos, así como unas muñequeras.
Antes que nada, intenté hacer el logo que tiene Goku en la camisa, bordando la palabra a mano... salió más o menos, no me quejo, era muy pequeña y las costuras acabaron por juntarse jaja Luego, cosí esta piecita en la ropa y comencé colocando algunos detalles que hicieran la mención de la camisa interna que lleva Goku debajo, dejando abierto en la zona de uno de los hombros. Para los zapatos, opté por hacerlos tipo "saquito", decorando con costura. Finalmente, cosí una tira para utilizarla en la cintura y para hacer las muñequeras.
De esta forma, el outfit de pelea de Goku, estuvo listo ✨ Me encanta la ropa de muñecos, porque al ser tan pequeña, luce adorable 😍
Lo siguiente, fue vestir al personaje, cosiendo a mano en la zona del hombro, en donde había dejado abierto (por ahí, es que entra el personaje), así como colocando la cinta en la cintura y en las muñecas y colocando silicón en los zapatos para que los mismos, no se cayesen.
El resultado hasta a mí me sorprendió, ya que, no es que no confíe en mis habilidades (la verdad... si desconfío, a pesar de que tengo años cosiendo jaja), pero como tenía años sin hacer peluches como comenté, tenía miedo de no poder lograr un resultado satisfactorio. Me alegro de que a pesar de mi temor y desconfianza, seguí adelante con el proyecto y no desistí aunque hubieron momentos en que la duda aparecía en medio de la labor de costura.
La clienta, por supuesto que quedó encantada y hasta quiere que le haga más peluches 😊 Por mi lado, espero abrir comisiones de peluche como tal, luego de practicar un poco más al hacer peluches pequeños que llamen mi atención. Después de todo, con éste trabajo, obtuve la confianza que necesitaba para volver a hacer algo que realmente amo dentro del maravilloso mundo que es la costura 💕🧵✂️
