🇪🇸 ~ Feliz Needlework Monday a todos queridos amigos, hace mucho tiempo que no compartía algún proyecto de costura interesante por aquí, y es que presiento que estoy atravesando una racha de poca motivación para la costura, porque como hemos platicado antes, coser toma tiempo, pide espacio, y la máquina de coser necesita electricidad, con la que no siempre contamos (sí, los cortes del servicio eléctrico continúan).
Muchas veces llegué a pensar que quizá solo me estaba volviendo perezosa, que preparar el espacio para hacer los cortes de los patrones y tomar fotografías bonitas ya no me resultaba tan emocionante, pero no es eso, creo que solo tengo cansancio acumulado, el cansancio que deja una rutina con espacios de tiempo muerto en una ciudad con un clima tan caluroso que puede hacerte enfermar.

Happy Needlework Monday to all my dear friends, it’s been a long time since I shared an interesting sewing project here, and the truth is, I feel like I’m going through a slump where I’m not very motivated to sew, because as we’ve talked about before, sewing takes time, requires space, and the sewing machine needs electricity, which we don’t always have (yes, the power outages continue).Many times I’ve thought that maybe I was just getting lazy, that setting up the space to cut out patterns and take pretty photos wasn’t as exciting to me anymore, but that’s not it, I think I’m just worn out, the kind of exhaustion that comes from a routine with downtime in a city with a climate so hot it can make you sick.
Pero aquí traigo un proyecto de costura que aunque no guarde fotos de su proceso de elaboración, creo que es lo suficientemente bonito para ser digno de un espacio aquí:
Hace unos 10 días aproximadamente una pequeña vecina me preguntó si podía ayudarla con un vestido que necesitará para un baile escolar en conmemoración del día de las madres, su maestra le dio una fotografía como guía a las madres de las niñas y se espera que el próximo 7 de Mayo todas las pequeñas luzcan replicas lo más cercanas posibles a esto.

But here’s a sewing project that, even though I don’t have any photos of the process, I think is pretty enough to deserve a spot here:About 10 days ago, a little girl from the neighborhood asked me if I could help her with a dress she’ll need for a school dance in honor of Mother’s Day. Her teacher gave the girls’ mothers a photo as a guide, and the plan is for all the little girls to wear replicas as close as possible to this one on May 7.

Esa sola referencia no me gustó mucho, no se aprecia el largo del vestido con claridad y tampoco el diseño de la parte posterior, y mi pequeña vecina insistía en qué lo quería "igual al de la foto", así que con la función de "Google image search" pude conseguir más imágenes de este vestido, aunque no encontré cuál es la tienda o diseñador original de este atuendo.
Creo que coincidirás conmigo en qué para una actividad escolar, el diseño escotado con bandas cruzadas en la espalda es problemático o mejor dicho inadecuado para una niña tan pequeña, por eso le ofrecí a mí "cliente" la alternativa de un diseño en la espalda tradicional, es decir una espalda cubierta con y con cierre con broche mucho más seguro y cómodo para vestir.

I didn't really like that single reference—you can't clearly see the length of the dress or the design of the back—and my little neighbor kept insisting she wanted it “just like the one in the photo,” so using Google Image Search, I was able to find more pictures of this dress, although I couldn't figure out which store or designer originally created it.I think you’ll agree with me that for a school activity, the low-cut design with crisscross straps on the back is problematic—or rather, inappropriate for such a young girl—so I offered my “client” the alternative of a traditional back design: a covered back with a snap closure, which is much safer and more comfortable to put on.
Hablando de los tiempos de elaboración, tarde 2 días en hacer este vestido con sus lazos, y 2 días en hacer el petticoat. Ambas piezas pude haberlas terminado en la mitad de ese tiempo pero de nuevo, los cortes del servicio eléctrico son un dolor de cabeza.
También por ese motivo no tomé fotos para convertir este proyecto de réplica de diseño en un tutorial completo, me falta motivación 😪

Justo hasta hoy por la tarde estaba cosiendo las distintas capas del petticoat; si te preguntas cuanto material utilicé, fueron 3 metros de tul (en mi opinión con 4 quedaría mejor mejor, mi pequeña cliente tiene 5 años). Aún no lo termino.
De este proyecto también puedo compartir la anécdota de que a pesar de que es prácticamente el mismo diseño de la imagen guía indicada por la maestra, una vez que estuvo terminado y fui a entregarlo recibió varios comentarios no tan positivos.
Por ejemplo, mi pequeña modelo solicitaba que cortara la falta hasta la rodilla, que modificara la forma del pecho para convertirlo en una pieza completa de cuello de tortuga, entre muchos otros comentarios similares.
Just this afternoon I was sewing the different layers of the petticoat; if you’re wondering how much fabric I used, it was 3 meters of tulle (in my opinion, 4 meters would have looked even better—my little client is 5 years old). I haven’t finished it yet.
I can also share a little story about this project: even though it’s practically the same design as the reference image provided by the teacher, once it was finished and I went to hand it in, I received several not-so-positive comments.
For example, my little model asked me to cut the skirt to knee length, to alter the neckline to make it a full turtleneck, among many other similar comments.
Eso me recordó porqué no soy muy fan de recibir comisiones o aceptar encargos de costura, no me gusta deconstruir piezas, es un dolor de cabeza para mí, especialmente si la prenda está bien hecha, si no tiene defectos de confección o medidas, y sobre todo, si es la viva imagen de lo que te solicitaron.
En este caso se trata de una niña pequeña pero los adultos no se quedan muy atrás, siento que muchas veces los servicios de costura personalizados o a medida son vistos más como una actividad recreativa y no como un servicio serio o la respuesta a una necesidad.
That reminded me why I’m not a big fan of taking on commissions or sewing projects—I don’t like taking garments apart; it’s a headache for me, especially if the garment is well-made, has no construction flaws or sizing issues, and, above all, if it’s exactly what the client asked for.
In this case, it’s a little girl, but adults aren’t far behind; I feel that personalized or custom sewing services are often seen more as a recreational activity rather than a serious service or a response to a need.
En general esta fue una experiencia de costura agradable y bastante oportuna para sacudirme el polvo de las manos, pero también un recordatorio de que debo mantenerme firme en saber cuándo decir que si y cuando decir que no cuando se trate de hacer ropa para otras personas.
También pude poner en práctica algo que llevaba algún tiempo pensando, y es que cuando se trata de comisiones de prendas casuales todo va mucho mejor si lo mantienes simple, lo más simple posible.
Overall, this was an enjoyable sewing experience and a good opportunity to dust off my skills, but it also served as a reminder that I need to stay firm in knowing when to say yes and when to say no when it comes to making clothes for other people.
I was also able to put into practice something I’d been thinking about for a while, which is that when it comes to casual clothing commissions, everything goes much better if you keep it simple—as simple as possible.
La verdad amigos, es que a casi nadie o mejor dicho a muy pocas personas les interesan las terminaciones de calidad +AAA o con nivel de atelier.
Así que mi consejo para ti si te identificas en algo conmigo, es que no te compliques demasiado, sobre todo si eres como yo que te gusta la costura invisible, los patrones perfectos y el forro milimétricamente bien instalado, es esfuerzo y tiempo que pocas personas valoran y al final la remuneración es la misma.
La calidad de mis costuras es la misma de siempre, bien cuidada, limpia, resistente, eso no ha cambiado, pero lo que si ha cambiado es mi manera de ejecutar los proyectos, ahora pienso en cual es el camino más corto, obvio que el resultado debe ser bueno y durable pero ya no me auto impongo un estándar de calidad que me tomará días de dedicación que al final pasarán desapercibidos.
The truth is, friends, that almost no one—or rather, very few people—are interested in AAA-quality or atelier-level finishes.
So my advice to you, if you identify with me in any way, is not to overcomplicate things, especially if you’re like me and love invisible stitching, perfect patterns, and lining installed with millimeter precision—it’s effort and time that few people appreciate, and in the end, the pay is the same.
The quality of my stitching is the same as always—meticulous, clean, and durable; that hasn’t changed. But what has changed is how I approach projects. Now I focus on the most efficient way to get the job done. Obviously, the result must be good and long-lasting, but I no longer impose a quality standard on myself that would require days of dedicated work—efforts that, in the end, would go unnoticed.
