While travelling, especially when I’m not the one driving, I’ve learned it’s the perfect chance to relax with my crochet hook. If my eyes stay on the road too long, I get impatient and a bit annoyed, so losing myself in yarn is my favourite way to pass the time.
But on this trip from the Cotswolds to Merseyside… let’s just say things didn’t go quite as planned!
I packed my little crochet kit: hook, yarn, scissors, garter and everything I needed. I decided I’d make a hairnet, not for going out, haha! but for the kitchen. Nothing is worse than someone finding a long hair in the meal you’ve cooked, so this was my solution to keep my hair out of the way.
I started by measuring the garter around my head, not too tight, not too loose, and then cut it and tied the ends securely.
After that, I single-crocheted all around the garter to make a base.
Then I worked a second row of single crochet for stability.
Since kitchens get warm and I didn’t want to end up sweating under thick stitches, I chose a light, lacey pattern. I chained four, skipped two spaces, then double-crocheted into the third. I repeated: chain two, skip two, and double crochet into the next. Nice, airy, and fast.
…or so I thought!
Then I realised the whole base had twisted. There was nothing for it but to puff, huff, and frog the whole thing.
Had to redo it.
By the time we reached the iconic Sutton Weaver Swing Bridge in Frodsham, I had only managed a few layers.
Once we arrived, I squeezed in more crocheting between chats. I eventually finished the height of the hairnet and then slowly decreased the circumference by single-crocheting around each post and then single-crocheting all around again while skipping one stitch at intervals to close the top.
Back home, I inspected it properly and felt very pleased with myself. Using the garter was such a good idea.
The underside even has a nice ridge, so it can be worn the other way around too.
I even added a small, not-too-fancy flower on top, simple, sweet, and just right.
And it turned into a very comfortable and useful little hairnet and completely solved the “hair falling into the food” problem.
Have a lovely day.
