The wrap dress is the most traditional form of dressing: It's like a robe, it's like a kimono, it's like a toga. It doesn't have buttons or zippers. What made it different was that it was jersey; therefore, it was close to the body and it was a print. - Diane von Furstenberg
The wrap dress dates far back to the 1930s and is by far one of the most flattering dresses ever created. It suits every body type, enhancing the bust with a V-neckline and cinches the waist. The best part is it's super comfortable and never goes out of style.
It's one of my favorite styles ever and I decided to make it for the first time. I had made a wrap top sometime last year and this time around decided to try a dress.
I got this polka dot fabric I thought would be nice for a wrap dress. It turned out to be too light and see-through though. I'd advise a thicker fabric so when the wrap part overlaps, one part doesn't look lighter than the other.
Cutting and Sewing
I drafted a basic top pattern on the fabric and added 8 inches to the width at the center front to get my wrap.
I then connected a line from the start of the neckline down to the beginning of the 8 inches mark to get a diagonal line. Then I cut along the line.
After being done with the top part, I made the skirt by cutting a high-low 180⁰ circle skirt using the formula, waist measurement-2 ÷ 3.142. This circumference was used to cut the waist round and then the length of the skirt was marked and cut shorter on one side of the circle to give it a high-low effect.
I sewed the top to the skirt to form the dress.
I also made a flounce to add to the bottom of the skirt using the same pattern I did for the skirt but with a shorter length.
The sleeves are a simple short sleeves cut with my basic sleeve pattern I already had and then I made 2 pieces of belts, one long and the other short.
...And the final look!
I still need to take it to a shop where I'll finish off the hem with an interlocking machine. Apart from that, it is ready wear.
