La Leyenda del Rey de Rohan Helm Mano de Hierro
La Tierra Media ha sido testigo de toda clase de eventos; en ella grandes batallas se libraron, reinos enteros se alzaron y posteriormente se derrumbaron, nacieron grandes héroes y murieron otros aún más grandes, y por supuesto gobernantes hubo de sobra, tanto grandes y poderosos reyes como otros que quizás no fueron tan recordados, y algunos otros pocos que se convierten en mito y leyenda de un pueblo entero. Hoy hablaremos de uno de los grandes reyes de los hombres y del aguerrido pueblo de Rohan.
Si viste o leíste las películas del Señor de los Anillos, concretamente el segundo volumen y/o película de la saga; Las Dos Torres, recordarás la batalla final, la Batalla del Abismo de Helm en la que el pueblo de Rohan lucha por repeles a las fuerzas de Isengard. Si eres muy curioso te habrás preguntado de donde viene ese nombre, o quizás no, pero lo cierto es que esta fortaleza lleva el nombre del más grande entre los reyes de Rohan, en este artículo te contaremos un poco de su historia y quien fue Helm Mano de Hierro.
The legend of the king of Rohan Helm Hammerhand
Middle-earth has witnessed all kinds of events; in it great battles were fought, whole kingdoms rose and later collapsed, great heroes were born and even greater ones died, and of course there were plenty of rulers, both great and powerful kings and others who perhaps were not so well remembered, and a few others who become myth and legend of an entire people. Today we will talk about one of the great kings of men and the brave people of Rohan.
If you saw or read the Lord of the Rings movies, specifically the second volume and/or movie of the saga; The Two Towers, you will remember the final battle, the Battle of Helm's Deep in which the people of Rohan fight to repel the forces of Isengard. If you are very curious you may have wondered where that name comes from, or maybe not, but the truth is that this fortress is named after the greatest among the kings of Rohan, in this article we will tell you a little of its history and who was Helm Hammerhand.
Comienza una leyenda.
Helm nació en los tiempos del reinado de su bisabuelo el sexto rey de Rohan Goldwine a finales del año 2600, concretamente en el año 2691 de la Tercera Edad, no sabemos el nombre de su madre pero sabemos que tenía una hermana llamada Hild, desde el momento de su nacimiento se supo que sería un gran guerrero, pues su linaje se remontaba a Eorl el Joven el señor de los Éothéod, pueblo del cual descendería Rohan, de hecho Eorl el Joven fue el primero rey de Rohan.
Así es que Helm era descendiente de un antiguo linaje de reyes que había perdurado incluso hasta sus días. La infancia de Helm transcurrió tranquila, o al menos eso podemos suponer ya que no se nos indica nada especial sobre su niñez, creció entre la nobleza de Rohan y cuando llegó a la edad de los ocho años el rey Goldwine falleció, dando paso al reinado de su abuelo Déor.
El reinado de Déor estuvo marcado por constantes conflictos con los Dunledinos, hombres que los Éotheod expulsaron de las tierras que hoy en día son Rohan luego de que Gondor les cediera la tierra para que ellos levantasen el reino de Rohan, los Dunledinos fueron expulsados a las colinas de los Montañas Nubladas formaron la tierra de Dunland, desde aquel día los Dunledinos y el pueblo de Rohan son enemigos acérrimos, una enemistad que duraría siglos.
The legend begins
Helm was born in the time of the reign of his great-grandfather the sixth king of Rohan Goldwine at the end of the year 2600, specifically in the year 2691 of the Third Age, we do not know the name of his mother but we know that he had a sister named Hild, from the moment of his birth it was known that he would be a great warrior, as his lineage went back to Eorl the Younger the lord of the Éothéod, people from which Rohan would descend, in fact Eorl the Younger was the first king of Rohan.
So Helm was a descendant of an ancient lineage of kings that had endured even to his own day. Helm's childhood passed quietly, or at least we can assume so since nothing special is indicated about his childhood, he grew up among the nobility of Rohan and when he reached the age of eight the king Goldwine died, giving way to the reign of his grandfather Déor.
The reign of Déor was marked by constant conflicts with the Dunlendings, men that the Éotheod expelled from the lands that today are Rohan after Gondor gave them the land for them to raise the kingdom of Rohan, the Dunlendings were expelled to the hills of the Misty Mountains formed the land of Dunland, from that day the Dunlendings and the people of Rohan are bitter enemies, an enmity that would last for centuries.
Primeros pasos en la niñez
A inicios del 1700 de la Tercera Edad, específicamente en el 1710 los ataques de los dunledinos empezaron a tener un efecto negativo en el reino de Rohan, incluso habían tomado por asalto el circulo de Isengard, salvo la Torre de Orthanc que quedó inexpugnable para ellos. El reinado de Déor culminó con su muerte y le sucedió su hijo el rey Gram, padre de Helm, por estas fechas Helm ya tenía veinticinco años de edad. Durante el reinado de Gram Helm tuvo dos hijos, no se sabe el nombre de la madre, pero los hijos de Helm eran Haleth y Háma, dos varones y una niña de la cual no se sabe el nombre. La hermana de Helm, Hild tuvo también un hijo llamado Freáláf.
Así pasaron las estaciones hasta que Helm llegó a los cincuenta años y para ese tiempo su padre el rey Gram murió, dejando a Helm como el noveno rey de Rohan, la primera década de su gobierno fue tranquila, pues no sabemos que aconteció durante esos años de su mandato.
Sin embargo, no todos estaban contentos con el reinado de Helm, entre ellos había un hombre en particular que estaba inconforme con su reinado, un noble llamado Freca, mal hablado entre los Rohirrin, se decía incluso que por él corría sangre dunledina, se decía que era un hombre muy rico y que tenía grandes extensiones de tierras en las inmediaciones de las Montañas Blancas, era uno de los abanderados de Helm pero poco caso hacía a los llamados de su rey. Freca decía descender del mismo linaje de Eorl el Joven, decía incluso ser hijo del mismo Féawine, tátara abuelo de Helm.
En uno de los tantos consejos reales que tenían lugar en Edoras, Freca acudió con una gran compañía de soldados y trató de pedir la mano de Hild para su hijo, Wulf. Helm negó la propuesta burlándose de Freca por plantear semejante oferta, y este le amenazó diciéndole que los reyes que tienen a rechazar el apoyo aliado son los primeros en caer y arrodillarse; Helm tomó muy mal las palabras de Freca pero no dijo nada hasta terminado el consejo real, luego de ello Helm se acercó a Freca y le obligó a salir de la fortaleza para un combate mano a mano, solo con los puños, luego de unas pocas palabras Helm golpeó a Freca en la cabeza de un puñetazo con una fuerza tal que le terminó matando en el acto, ganándose así el apodo de Mano de Hierro.
Luego de esto los vasallos de Freca, entre ellos su hijo Wulf fueron proclamados enemigos de Rohan y huyeron a las tierras de Dunland, los hombres de Helm no pudieron encontrarlos a pesar de que les dieron casa tras la huida.
Childhood times
At the beginning of the 1700s of the Third Age, specifically in 1710, the attacks of the Dunlendings began to have a negative effect on the kingdom of Rohan, they had even taken by assault the circle of Isengard, except for the Tower of Orthanc that remained impregnable for them. For fifty years the Rohirrin tried to regain it, but all their attempts were in vain.
The reign of Déor culminated with his death and he was succeeded by his son King Gram, father of Helm, by this time Helm was already twenty-five years old. During Gram's reign Helm had two children, the mother's name is not known, but Helm's children were Haleth and Háma, two boys and a girl whose name is not known. Helm's sister Hild also had a son named Freáláf.
Thus the seasons passed until Helm reached the age of fifty and by that time his father King Gram died, leaving Helm as the ninth king of Rohan, the first decade of his rule was quiet, for we do not know what happened during those years of his rule.
However, not everyone was happy with Helm's reign, among them there was one man in particular who was dissatisfied with his reign, a nobleman named Freca, foul-mouthed among the Rohirrin, it was even said that he had Dunlendings blood running through him, it was said that he was a very rich man and that he had large tracts of land in the vicinity of the White Mountains, he was one of Helm's standard bearers but he paid little attention to the calls of his king. Freca claimed to descend from the same lineage as Eorl the Younger, he even claimed to be the son of Féawine himself, Helm's great-great-grandfather.
In one of the many royal councils that took place in Edoras, Freca came with a large company of soldiers and tried to ask for Hild's hand for his son, Wulf. Helm denied the proposal, mocking Freca for making such an offer, and Freca threatened him by telling him that kings who have to refuse allied support are the first to fall to their knees; Helm took Freca's words very badly but said nothing until the royal council was finished, after that Helm approached Freca and forced him to leave the fortress for a hand to hand combat, only with his fists, after a few words Helm hit Freca in the head with a punch with such a force that he ended up killing him on the spot, earning the nickname of Hammerhand .
After this Freca's vassals, among them his son Wulf were proclaimed enemies of Rohan and fled to the lands of Dunland, Helm's men could not find them even though they gave them a home after the escape.
La venganza de los traidores y la furia de Helm
Cuatro años más tarde Wulf cobraría venganza de lo sucedido en aquella reunión, reunió un gran ejercito de Dunledinos, también contó con la ayuda de piratas y corsarios de Umbar que habían desembarcado en las corrientes de río Isen, Wulf escogió el momento propicio para atacar Rohan pues el reino estaba también siendo asediado desde el este por los hombres provenientes de las tierras de Rhun.
Rohan se vió superado en número y no pudo contar con la ayuda de Gondor pues estos estaban sufriendo también los ataques y saqueos de los corsarios de Umbar quienes llevaban tiempo en conflicto con el reino de Gondor. Rohan plantó resistencia en la frontera Oeste in el en los Vados de Isen pero no pudieron contener el avance de los invasores.
Helm no tuvo otra alternativa que atrincherase junto a su hijo menor Háma en una fortaleza en las montañas conocida como Cuernavilla, el ejercito de Wulf continuó avanzando hasta tomar Edoras la capital de Rohan y allí en la ciudad murió en combate el mayor de los hijos de Helm, Haleth. Wulf se proclamó entonces rey de Rohan, los hombres de dunland tomaron a los rohirrin como esclavos y solo unas pocas personas del reino lograron huir y refugiarse en Cuernavilla.
Luego de esta invasión llego un tortuoso y larguísimo invierno que dejó a Rohan enterrado bajo la nieve por muchos años, el sol se ocultaba por meses, tanto los supervivientes del pueblo de Rohan como los de Dunland sufrieron grandes pérdidas, la hambruna reinaba en la región, no solo eso sino que Cuernavilla comenzó a ser sitiada por los hombres de Duland dificultando así la recolección y búsqueda de alimentos para os supervivientes .
El tiempo pasó y Háma, en un intento desesperado por llevar comida a su pueblo reunió a un grupo de hombres y salió en expedición en busca de comida en medio del feroz invierno, lamentablemente desaparecieron, ninguno de los hombres que participaron de esa incursión volvió a Cuernavilla. Esto fue un duro golpe para Helm quien a causa del dolor y la hambruna se volvió un hombre feroz, lleno de ira y con sed de venganza.
Fue tal la furia y la ira de Helm de perder a sus dos hijos que comenzó a salir en solitario, al caer la noche de la fortaleza, vestido de blanco y con las manos desnudas se infiltraba en los campamentos enemigos que se hallaban alrededor de la fortaleza y mataba a tantos vasallos enemigos como podía.
El terror se adueñó de los dunledinos que sitiaban la fortaleza, muchos incluso desertaron, comenzaron a contarse espeluznantes historias de terror sobre el demonio que cazaba a los hombres por la noche para comérselos, Helm tenía un cuerno tallado que soplaba cada noche al salir de incursión, tal era el miedo que infundía que se convertiría en una leyenda y en un cuento de terror para los enemigos.
Así pasaron los años, hasta que una de tantas noches, a la edad de sesenta y ocho años, Helm salió de Cuernavilla pero no volvió jamás, cuando el sol volvió a ponerse en el cielo se divisaba una figura blanquecina, erguida en la nieve como una estatua, petrificada en la nieve. Era Helm Mano de Hierro quien había muerto frente a los muros de Cuernavilla. No hubo invasor alguno que se atreviera a tocar Cuernavilla luego de aquello, decían que el cuerno de Helm aun podía escucharse en las noches frías y oscuras, dando pie a una leyenda entre todos los pueblos de la Tierra Media.
Revenge of the traitors and Helm's fury
Four years later Wulf would take revenge for what happened at that meeting, he gathered a large army of Dunlending, he also had the help of pirates and corsairs from Umbar who had landed in the Isen river currents, Wulf chose the right time to attack Rohan as the kingdom was also being besieged from the east by men from the lands of Rhun.
Rohan was outnumbered and could not count on the help of Gondor as they were also suffering the attacks and plundering of the Umbar corsairs who had long been in conflict with the kingdom of Gondor. Rohan planted resistance on the western border in the fords of Isen but they could not contain the advance of the invaders.
Helm had no choice but to entrench himself and his youngest son Háma in a mountain fortress known as Hornburg, Wulf's army continued to advance until it took Edoras, the capital of Rohan, and there in the city the eldest of Helm's sons, Haleth, was killed in battle. Wulf then proclaimed himself king of Rohan, the dunland men took the Rohirrin as slaves and only a few people of the kingdom managed to flee and take refuge in Hornburg.
After this invasion came a tortuous and very long winter that left Rohan buried under the snow for many years, the sun was hidden for months, both the survivors of the people of Rohan and Dunland suffered great losses, famine reigned in the region, not only that but Hornburg began to be besieged by the men of Duland making it difficult to collect and search for food for the survivors.
Time passed and Háma, in a desperate attempt to bring food to her people gathered a group of men and went on an expedition in search of food in the middle of the fierce winter, unfortunately they disappeared, none of the men who participated in that raid returned to Hornburg. This was a hard blow for Helm who because of the pain and famine became a fierce man, full of anger and thirst for revenge.
Such was Helm's fury and anger at losing his two sons that he began to go out alone at nightfall from the fortress, dressed in white and with bare hands he would infiltrate the enemy camps around the fortress and kill as many enemy vassals as he could.
The terror took possession of the dunlendings that besieged the fortress, many even deserted, creepy horror stories began to be told about the demon that hunted men at night to eat them, Helm had a carved horn that blew every night when he went out on a raid, such was the fear he instilled that he would become a legend and a tale of terror for the enemies.
Thus the years passed, until one of many nights, at the age of sixty-eight, Helm left Hornburg but never returned, when the sun set in the sky again, a whitish figure could be seen, standing upright in the snow like a statue, petrified in the snow. It was Helm Iron Hand who had died in front of the walls of Hornburg. No invader dared to touch Hornburg after that, they said that Helm's horn could still be heard in the cold and dark nights, giving rise to a legend among all the peoples of Middle-earth.
La consumación de una leyenda
Posteriormente Fréaláf que había sobrevivido al asalto de los invasores huyendo a l Sagrario contratacó con una pequeña hueste de soldados, llegó hasta Edoras y acorraló desprevenido a Wulf, matándole y retomando la ciudad, poco tiempo pasó para que se rompiera el asedio a Cuernavilla, luego de todo esto Fréaláf fue coronado Rey de Rohan, con el tiempo Rohan incluso expusló a los invasores que tenían tomado el Circulo desierto de Isengard con ayuda de Gondor y la volvió la estabilidad a la región, pero eso ya es otra historia que se contará luego.
La leyenda de Helm Mano de Hierro fue tal que la Fortaleza de Cuernavilla pasó a llamarse el Abismo de Helm en honor al más aguerrido y feroz rey que tuvo Rohan en su historia.
The consummation of a legend
Subsequently Fréaláf who had survived the assault of the invaders fleeing to l Sagrario counterattacked with a small host of soldiers, reached Edoras and cornered unsuspecting Wulf, killing him and retaking the city, little time passed before the siege of Hornburg was broken, after all this Fréaláf was crowned King of Rohan, in time Rohan even exposed the invaders who had taken the desert Circle of Isengard with the help of Gondor and returned stability to the region, but that is another story that will be told later.
The legend of Helm Iron Hand was such that the Fortress of Hornburg was renamed Helm's Deep in honor of the most fierce and fierce king that Rohan had in its history.
