Since there are so many lovely birds here, I wanted to build a birdfeeder. And as it is not possible to drink our tap water, a large pile of empty water jugs was collected quickly. These can be used and are used by many for other purposes. Mostly regarding farming and creative works, where containers are needed. Like in painting, or sculpting.
One day I had this idea about putting together an automatic birdfeeder from these surplus plastic jugs. Some additional materials were required, but not too many. A small piece of wood to screw the eyehook into the top cap and some paint to make it look like wood for the birdies. The top part can take a lot of bird food and the bottom part is filled with sand to provide extra stability and gravitational aid to keep it from dangling in the wind too much.
It turned out over the last two weeks, that the birds really love it. The design also prefers small birds and prevents the real big ones from using it. There are really large birds here and they are ground feeders, like doves. Doves have lots to eat and do not need additional food. However, the little guys are depending on insects and seeds and both are not readily available during winter time.
It makes me happy to see all these little birdies stop by for a snack. The bigger ones are also welcome to hang around. There are some great singers among them.
