It's been a busy week and one of a lot of progress. Let me show you how this instrument is looking at the moment.
Ha sido una semana muy ocupada y de mucho progreso. Déjenme mostrarles cómo se ve el instrumento hasta ahora.

First, we have a simple step. Just a cut to fit the sound board on the neck just bellow the fret board. This was the easiest thing to do during this visit to the workshop.
Comenzamos por lo fácil. Un corte para acoplar la tapa armónica en el mástil justo por debajo del diapasón. Esta fue la tarea más fácil de esta visita al taller.
Next, we have the slots of the frets. This is done with two types of saws. The first one is to make the initial and superficial cut. Then, it is replaced by a thinner saw. This is to give the slot a V-shape. That way the fret can be hammered in place and it will be kept in place by pressure.
Continuamos con las ranuras de los trastes. Esto se hace con dos tipos de sierras. La primera es para hacer el corte superficial. Luego, se cambia por una más delgada. Esto es para que la ranura tenga una forma de V. De esta manera, el traste se puede insertar a presión con un martillo y se mantendrá en su lugar sin necesidad de pegamento.
Before joining the sound board and the neck, there's a few things to fix about the heel. With the help of a carving knife and some guidance, this task is a breeze. However, it's always good to look at the work from many angles to see how it looks.
Antes de unir estas piezas, hay que corregir algunos detalles del tacón. Con la ayuda de un cuchillo y unas instrucciones, esto fue un paseo. Sin embargo, es una buena idea mirar el trabajo desde varios ángulos para darse cuenta de los detalles.
This looks weird. The idea of the piece of metal is to align the soundboard and the fretboard. Otherwise, the cuatro would look crooked once it is assembled.
Esto parace extraño. La función de la pieza de metal es alinear la tapa armónica con el diapasón. De lo contrario, el cuatro se vería torcido una vez ensamblado.
After some glue, this is the result.
Un poco de pegamento y este es el resultado.
In another visit to the workshot the same week, I began the task of bending the sides of the cuatro. This took me forever. Bending wood is a task of patience and good hearing. If you hear a crack, you have to stop and give the wood time to rest and then get again on it. Also, you need to hydrate wood in order for it to retain it's shape after is heated.
En otra visita al taller en la misma semana, comencé la tarea de doblar los aros. Esto fue eterno. Doblar madera es algo que requiere paciencia y buen oído. Si escuchar crujir la madera, hay que detenerse y darle a la pieza tiempo para descansar; luego se continúa. Además, hay que hidratar la madera para que mantenga su forma luego de ser calentada.
Leaving the cuatro aside for a moment, I had the chance to get working in a tool to glue the sides to the soundboard.
Poniendo el cuatro a un lado por un momento, pude trabajar en una herramienta para pegar los aros a la tapa armónica.
Back at home, it's time to get this ready for the sides to rest on the sound board. For this, we first need to glue the internal heel in place.
De regreso en casa, es tiempo de preparar todo para pegar los aros a la tapa armónica. Para esto, primero se debe pegar el tacón interno.
With this in place and after looking for a board in which to place my L-shape jigs, it's time to get the sides in place. I also found some pieces to apply pressure from the in-side of the sides. You'll see that I mean in the photos.
Con esto en su lugar y después de conseguir una tabla donde colocar estos tacos en forma de L, es tiempo de pegar los aros en su lugar. Además, conseguí unas piezas para hacer presión desde el lado interno de los aros hacia afuera. Verán a lo que me refiero en un momento.
