The contractor arrived at 3PM and wanted to finish the shelves in the root cellar. What was left was cutting the wire shelving to size, filing the sharp edges and coating them so they don’t rust. This is a job I can do, mostly sitting.
We got the 4’ shelves done first as they were easiest.
Then we did the smaller shelves and as we worked our way down the box, we discovered the last few full size shelves had gotten badly bent in shipping. They can be bent back into shape but it will be a job. Fortunately, we had more full sized shelves than we needed, so we didn’t have to mess with the bent ones.
It took an hour to finish them and set them to dry. I will install them on Thursday and the root cellar construction will be done. Sometime after March 1, I hope to start cleaning out the old root cellar and moving things into the new one.
An awful photo, but we next went up to the dining room to tackle the last crack in the flooring. He had wanted to try clamping it to see if it would close. To do this, he had to take up the last floorboard. To do that he had to remove the trim and thresholds and baseboard.
The clamp would go against the remaining floorboard in the doorway.
Then he made a small brace that fit into this small hole at the bottom of the barnboard. He had a series of clamps from here to the doorway. But they didn’t shift the boards to close the gap.
Next he rigged up spacers to try to use his little floor jacks as we’d had good luck with them on the other crack. But after 2 hours, we’d not gained much. We decided to leave everything as it was and see if the crack closed any over the next 2 days.
So he should be back on Friday and we’ll go from there. But at this point it looks like we will just put everything back together, put a new board in the length of the wall, and see what happens over the summer. So blue tape on the floor all summer.
