On Friday the contractor got there before I got back, so he got the rest of the wire shelves finished for the root cellar.
Then we tackled the dining room floor. Since he had been here 2 days ago, the floor by the cabinet had buckled up a lot. We had checked it, there was plenty of room for that board to move, but it wasn’t budging.
So we took the baseboard off again, and then we noticed that the 2nd board from the cabinet was moving up and down as it buckled, but the first board wasn’t. Something was holding it in place. So he pried at it and with a crack! It broken loose and moved over into the crack area.
Something else was holding it away from the cabinet. So he cut away the piece above from the bamboo floor. It still wouldn’t move. It looked like the subfloor, or something else was under it, so he cut away and cut away, all the way to the very end by the barnboards. And finally it moved.
He was walking around on it and sort of bouncing and then he did a little dance on it and it moved a lot! I said, “Dance faster, dance faster!” and when he did it closed up entirely. We were both laughing about that!
So we finally won this round with the floor. We are going to leave it as it is for now and see what happens in the summer when the humidity returns.
He went down and started roughing out a new wider piece of flooring for in front of the door. We plan to put that down and screw it in place. We’ll wait til fall to remove the flooring jacks and replace the piece of wood with a wider one.
He’ll be back on Monday to try to get that piece in by the door.
