Hello dear Hive friends. It's hard to find someone who doesn't like fireflies. When I was little I saw them in cartoons, but I met them in person when I was old.
It always seemed wonderful to me that a flying animal could generate light.

There are about 2000 species of fireflies. They live in various warm environments and in more temperate regions, being a familiar presence on summer nights. Fireflies love humidity and are therefore often found in humid regions of Asia and the Americas. In drier areas they can be found in the vicinity of wet or swampy areas that retain moisture.

Fireflies have special light organs located under the abdomen. When they absorb oxygen, it combines within special cells with a substance called luciferin and reacts by producing light with little heat generation.

Firefly light is usually intermittent, and glows in a species-specific way. Each glow is an optical signal that helps fireflies find potential mates. Scientists don't know exactly how insects regulate the process of turning their light on and off.

The light from the firefly could also serve as a defense mechanism, giving off a clear signal that the insect is not an appetizing snack. The fact that even larvae are luminescent seems to support this theory.

The females lay their eggs on the ground, and this is where the larvae develop to adulthood. The larvae feed underground on worms and slugs, which they numb by injecting them with paralyzing fluid.

Male Photinus beetles emit a flashing light pattern to signal for females. Illegitimate receivers, such as female Photuris beetles, identify these signals and use them to locate the male Photinus, attract them with deceptive signals, and eat them.
