Cambiemos de técnica (ESP/ENG)

Para ayudar a que todo este proceso creativo de veintiún días dibujando sea más entretenido vamos a ir variando las técnicas. ¿Conoces el carboncillo?

To help make this whole creative process of twenty-one days of drawing more entertaining, we are going to vary the techniques. Do you know charcoal?

Este día estaba lista para salir a dar una clase de dibujo a una de mis estudiantes, nos tocaba comenzar a trabajar volúmenes con carboncillo. Sin embargo, ella me pidió reprogramar la clase por motivos personales, de todas formas yo tenia todo el material a la mano así que por que no usarlo.

This day I was ready to go out to give a drawing class to one of my students, we were to start working on volumes with charcoal. However, she asked me to reschedule the class for personal reasons, anyway I had all the material at hand so why not use it.

En este caso opté por trabajar el carboncillo sobre una hoja de papel kraf para variar el soporte. Para hacer el dibujo 3 que fue el gallo-tortuga busque muchas referencias de imágenes y entre ellas estaba esta gallinita por lo que me pareció una buena idea para poner en practica con el material que estaría trabajando.

In this case I chose to work with charcoal on a sheet of kraf paper to vary the support. To make drawing 3, which was the rooster-turtle, I looked for many image references and among them was this little hen, so it seemed to me a good idea to put into practice with the material I would be working with.

Lo principal para hacer esta gallina fue ubicarla en formas geométricas, en especifico en dos círculos, uno grande que ocupa todo el volumen de su cuerpo y otro más pequeño para la cabeza. También como lineas guías tracé una diagonal corta para marcar el eje donde miraba el animal.

The main thing to make this hen was to place it in geometric shapes, specifically in two circles, a large one that occupies the entire volume of its body and a smaller one for the head. Also as guide lines I traced a short diagonal to mark the axis where the animal was looking.

Este dibujo lo hice en su mayoría usando un lápiz de carboncillo blando de la marca Pointer. Aquí lo importante era tratar de imitar la textura emplumada de esta ave.

This drawing was mostly done using a Pointer soft charcoal pencil. Here the important thing was to try to imitate the feathered texture of this bird.

Una vez ubicados los elementos principales como los ojos y el pico lo demás fue ir rellenando con lineas cortas siguiendo una forma circular y más o menos el patrón de luces y sombras. Aunque solo con las lineas distribuidas de esa forma podía verse como una gallina bien gordita.

Once the main elements such as the eyes and the beak were placed, the rest was to fill in with short lines following a circular shape and more or less the pattern of lights and shadows. Although only with the lines distributed in that way it could look like a very chubby hen.

El carboncillo tiene la característica de poder difuminarse con facilidad y eso lo usé para generar sombras más amplias y suavizadas. Para trabajar el fondo si usé una barra de carbón para abarcar un mayor espacio. En este caso me fui por un fondo bastante oscurecido, esto iba a contrastar directamente con la silueta de la gallina que estaba en tonos muy claros.

The charcoal has the characteristic of being easily blurred and I used it to generate wider and softer shadows. To work the background I used a charcoal stick to cover a larger space. In this case I went for a quite dark background, this was going to contrast directly with the silhouette of the hen that was in very light tones.

Como detalle en la parte de abajo dibujé unas lineas que simulan el pasto o monte donde se encuentra nuestra gallinita.

As a detail in the lower part I drew some lines that simulate the grass or bush where our hen is located.

Y este es el resultado final de la gallina en carboncillo. A diferencia del día anterior, para este dibujo 4 pude disfrutar más del proceso creativo que es lo importante al final cuando decides ponerte a dibujar.

Me encanta usar el carboncillo me parece un material muy practico y versátil para usarlo en distintas superficies. Por cierto, para finalizar este dibujo le aplique una capa de fijador para preservar el material en el papel.

And this is the final result of the chicken in charcoal. Unlike the previous day, for this drawing I was able to enjoy more the creative process, which is the most important thing in the end when you decide to start drawing.

I love to use charcoal, I find it a very practical and versatile material to use on different surfaces. By the way, to finish this drawing I applied a layer of fixative to preserve the material on the paper.
