Hello friends, I hope you are very well today I want to show you how I was able to repair a bicycle seat instead of buying a new one, simply using materials that I found in my house and with a little ingenuity I was able to achieve it. I took the seat to a professional upholsterer and he told me that he couldn't do it since he didn't know how to leave the hole in the seat unfilled, so I took it as a challenge to do it myself and I want to show you how I did it and the results I achieved, I hope you like it.
Hola amigos, espero que se encuentren muy bien hoy quiero mostrarles como pude reparar un asiento de bicicleta en lugar de comprar uno nuevo, simplemente utilizando materiales que encontré en mi casa y con un poco de ingenio pude lograrlo. Lleve el asiento con un tapicero de profesión y me dijo que no podía hacerlo ya que no sabía como dejar el agujero que tiene el asiento sin rellenar, de manera que lo tomé como un desafío para hacerlo por mi mismo y quiero mostrarles como lo hice y los resultados que logré, espero que les guste.
PROCESS
In the first images you can see how the previous protection was, it was totally deteriorated, there was no way to make a patch so it was time to replace all the damaged synthetic leather with a new one. So for that I was removing the safety clips that it had on the internal edges and I also removed the tubes that serve to connect it to the bicycle frame. When removing the previous synthetic leather, it was so damaged that it ended up breaking completely, from there I then began to clean the entire seat of impurities.
En las primeras imágenes pueden ver como se encontraba la protección anterior, estaba totalmente deteriorada, no había forma de hacer un remiendo de manera que tocaba reemplazar todo el cuero sintético dañado por uno nuevo. Así que para eso fui quitando las grapas de seguridad que tenía por los bordes internos y también le quite los tubos que sirven para conectarla con el cuadro de la bicicleta. Al quitar el cuero sintético anterior este estaba tan dañado que se terminó de romper por completo, de ahí luego comence a limpiar todo el asiento de impurezas.
Then we are going to cut the synthetic leather with which we will replace the previous one that was damaged. To be able to draw the pattern, we place the seat on the leather and with a marker we will trace the shape of the seat, but we will add 7 centimeters more, we do it like this so that there is enough space in the leather and then we will stick it along the edges of the seat. the same way as the previous leather. Then we draw a line in the center using the hole in the seat as a guide, we do this so as not to cover the hole in the seat as it helps prevent damage to the prostate. Then we cut another smaller piece and also draw a line, the objective will be to join them to both pieces using a needle and thread and making a seam between them.
Después vamos a cortar el cuero sintético con el que reemplazaremos el anterior que estaba dañado. Para apoder sacar el patrón colocamos el asiento sobre el cuero y con un marcador trazaremos la forma del asiento, pero le pondremos 7 centímetros de mas, lo hacemos así para que nos sobre espacio en el cuero para luego irlo pegando por los bordes del asiento de la misma manera que el cuero anterior. Luego trazamos una linea en el centro utilizando el agujero del asiento como guía, esto lo hacemos para no cubrir el agujero del asiento ya que ayuda a prevenir daños en la próstata. Luego cortamos otra pieza más pequeña y tambien trazamos una línea, el objetivo será unirlas a ambas piezas utilizando aguja e hilo y haciendo una costura entre ellas.
Now we begin to sew with a needle and thread and very carefully the two pieces of leather that we took out. Using a single stitch we sew the entire edge of both pieces. After finishing we observe that the seam has turned out very well and we turn to the inner side of the seam to see that it has turned out very well. We can see some wrinkled areas, it is because this leather is a bit weak and does not stretch easily because it could break. We do one last test taking the seat and placing the lining as if we were going to glue it, so we see that the cut has been exactly as we need it.
Ahora comenzamos a coser con aguja e hilo y con mucho cuidado las dos piezas de cuero que sacamos. Utilizando un punto sencillo cosemos todo el borde de ambas piezas. DEspues de terminar observamos que la costura haya quedado muy bien y volteamos hacia el lado interno de la costura para ver que haya quedado muy bien. Podemos observar algunas zonas arrugadas es porque este cuero es un poco debil y no se estira con facilidad porque podría romperse. HAcemos una última prueba tomando el asiento y colocando el forro como si lo fueramos a pegar, así vemos que el corte haya quedado exactamente como lo necesitamos.
After we have measured we will then begin to glue the leather on the seat, we put a little sponge in this part that was missing and then with a brush we put glue on the inside of the lining, but without putting glue on the piece that will go inside the hole, we'll do that last. We also put glue on the rubber of the seat and let it dry for a few minutes, then we place the lining little by little so that there are no air bubbles, we stretch the lining, we start from the tip until we finish at the back, we stretch and press so that it is very well glued.
Después que hayamos medido comenzaremos entonces a pegar el cuero en el asiento, ponemos un poco de esponja en esta parte que estaba faltando y luego con una brocha echamos pegamento en la parte interna del forro, pero sin echarle pegamento a la pieza que irá dentro del agujero, eso lo haremos de último. También le echamos pegamento a la goma del asiento y dejamos secar por algunos minutos, espues vamos colocando poco a poco el forro para que no queden burbujas de aire estiramos el forro, comenzamos desde la punta hasta finalizar en la parte trasera, vamos estirando y presionando para que qued emuy bien pegado.
To finish, we put glue on the other piece that will go inside the hole. In the same way, we put glue on the inside and let it dry for a few minutes, then gradually glue the leather. Finally, we put the tubes and plastic protectors back in place and that's how we have finished the repair.
Para finalizar colocamos entonces pegamento a la otra pieza que irá dentro del hoyo de igual forma colocamos pegamento en la parte interior y dejamos secar unos minutos para luego ir poco a poco pegando el cuero. Por último colocamos de nuevo en su sitio los tubos y laos protectores de plastico y a´si hemos finalizado con la reparación.
Before finishing I pressed very well again all the areas that had glue to make sure there were no air bubbles left, also with scissors I cut the excess leather that protruded so that it didn't look horrible. I just need to put staples on it but that will be later because I don't have a stapler. This is how you can repair a seat in poor condition with easy-to-find materials, it only takes a little time and patience to achieve it and the best thing is that we will save money by buying something new. Antes de terminar volví a presionar muy bien todas las zonas que tenía pegamento para asegurarme de que no quedaran burbujas de aire, también con una tijera corté el exedente de cuero que sobresalía para que no se viera horrible.
