Hello dear friends, I hope you're all doing well. I'm back to share with you my greatest passion: a black and white drawing. Bringing Tupac Shakur to life through drawing is to capture an icon whose contradictions made him unique. Although the world remembers him as the ultimate exponent of West Coast gangsta rap, Tupac's artistic sensibility came from a completely different place: during his adolescence in Baltimore, he studied acting, poetry, and classical ballet, even playing the role of the Mouse King in The Nutcracker. I created this drawing with the intention of capturing precisely that: the gaze of a man who could write the most scathing social commentary in the morning and be moved by the delicacy of art in the afternoon. Hola queridos amigos, espero que se encuentren muy bien, de regreso para compartir con ustedes mi mayor pasión, un dibujo en blanco y negro. Darle vida a Tupac Shakur a través del dibujo es plasmar a un ícono cuyas contradicciones lo hacían único. Aunque el mundo lo recuerda como el máximo exponente del gangsta rap de la Costa Oeste, la sensibilidad artística de Tupac venía de un lugar completamente diferente: durante su adolescencia en Baltimore, estudió actuación, poesía y ballet clásico, llegando incluso a interpretar el papel del Rey de los Ratones en El Cascanueces. Este dibujo lo hice con la intención de capturar justamente eso: la mirada de un hombre que podía escribir la crítica social más cruda por la mañana y conmoverse con la delicadeza del arte por la tarde. I started with the simplest thing, creating a simple sketch. Here, a single vertical oval is enough. After that, the other lines are drawn to position the eyes, nose, and mouth within the space. Then, the lines need to be adjusted to achieve facial symmetry. This is a step that must be done carefully to ensure the lines are positioned correctly.
Comencé por lo más sencillo, crear un simple boceto, aquí solamente con un óvalo que esté´de forma vertical es suficiente, luego de eso se trazan las demás líneas para ir ubicando en el espacio interior, los ojos la nariz y la boca. Luego de esto toca ir acomodando las líneas para cumplir con la simetría del rostro. Es un paso que hay que hacer con cuidado para ubicar bien las líneas.
Another thing I added to the sketch was the hands clasped towards the face as a symbol of humility and meditation. Once I finished the sketch, I began to give volume to the drawing. I did this by filling in the inner part of the face, painting the skin with strong and soft strokes where needed.
Otra cosa que agregué al boceto fueron las manos unidas hacia el rostro en símbolo de humilda y de meditación. Una vez terminado cone l boceto comienzo a dalre volumen al dibujo, esto lo hago rellenando la parte interior del rostro,. pintando la piel con trazos fuertes y suaves donde la ocasión lo demande.
As I've always mentioned in my previous works, the volume of facial skin is achieved in two ways, by alternating between light and shadow. For example, there are parts of the skin that, while visible, don't reflect ambient light. In this case, I use white wax crayon. On the other hand, when painting areas of skin that do reflect light from a source, I use white charcoal, which is more intense. To achieve more shine, white paint can be used. As you can see, it all follows a progression on the scale of the same color.
Como siempre he mencionado en mis trabajos anteriores, el volumen de la piel del rostro se consigue de dos maneras, alternando entre luces y sombras. Por ejemplo, hay partes de la piel que si bien se puede apreciar, no reflejan la luz del ambiente, para este caso se utiliza el color blanco de cera, en cambio, cuando se va a pintar aquellas zonas de la piel que reflejan la luz de algun lugar, utilizo el carboncillo de color blanco, el cual es más intenso, y para lograr más brillo se puede utilizar pintura blanca, como pueden ver todo obedece a una evolución en la escala del mismo color.
In this set of images, you can better appreciate my previous points, how the contrast is achieved around different areas of the face. Thus, the volume of the drawing gains depth and strength in space, gradually achieving a photographic effect.
En este bloque de imágenes pueden apreciar aún mejor mis anteriores palabras, como el contraste se va logrando alrededor de diversas sonas del rostro. Así el volumen del dibujo va tomando profundidad y fuerza en el espacio hasta ir logrando poco a poco un efecto fotográfico.
Then I added small details like the tiny chain adorning Tupac's neck. I also drew and shaped the hands, and as I mentioned before, I used white chlorine paint to add intensity to certain areas. This is how, detail by detail, I gradually achieved a more realistic look in the illustration.
Luego fui haciendo pequeños detalles como una pequeña cadena que adorna el cuello de Tupac, así también dibujo y le doy forma a las manos, como había mencionado antes también utilizo pintura de clor blanco para dar más intensidad a ciertas partes. Es así como detalle a detalle se va logrando un poco más de realismo en la ilustración.

And so this portrait is finished. What do you think of the result? In my opinion, this is one of my favorite portraits I've done. The result exceeded my expectations. Of all the portraits I've done over the years, this one really helped me use my skills. Tupac was a legend, so much so in Hip Hop culture that he left an indelible mark. Es así como ha quedado finalizado este retrato. ¿Qué les ha parecido el resultado? a mi parecer este ha sido uno de los retratos que más me ha gustado, el resultado fue más de lo que esperaba, de tantos que he realizado en lo largo del tiempo, este dibujo me hizo utilizar mejor mis habilidades. Tupac fue un grande, tan grande en la cultura Hip Hop que dejó su marca imborrable, aún se sigue escuchando con la misma fuerza porque las cosas no han cambiado.
