Hello dear friends, happy afternoon! I hope you're all doing well. After a short break for the Christmas holidays, I'm back to share a craft project with you. I've made a wooden carving, a piece related to action and mystery in the world of comics. I had the opportunity to make a Batarang, one of the most iconic weapons Batman has ever used. What's interesting about this gadget is its maneuverability. Every Batman we've seen in comics and movies has a Batarang that identifies him. I made the one Batfleck used in the 2016 film Batman v Superman, one of my favorite Batmen, even though he didn't have much screen time for reasons we all know. This Batarang is large and its design is more substantial than the previous ones, which were less striking in terms of size. Here's a brief explanation of how I made it. I hope you like it! Hola queridos amigos, feliz tarde, espero que se encuentren muy bien, después de un breve descanso por los días de navidad, he regresado para poder compartir con ustedes un trabajo manual. He realizado una pieza tallada en madera, una pieza que está relacionada con la acción, el misterio en el mundo de los comics. He tenido la oportunidad de hacer un Batarang, una de las armas más emblemáticas que ha utilizado Batman en todos los tiempos, lo interesante de este artilugio es su maniobrabilidad, cada Batman que hemos visto en los comics y en las películas tiene un Batarang que lo identifica, yo he realizado el que utilizó Batfleck en la película de 2016 en Batman vs Superman, uno de mis Batman favoritos, aunque no duró mucho tiempo en pantalla por las razones que todos conocemos, este Batarang es grande y su diseño es más masivo que los anteriores que eran menos llamativos en cuanto al tamaño. The first step was choosing the wood. I used recycled wood from an old drawer, which was very soft but also brittle, so I chose it for carving. After that, I cut it to a size where I could draw the shape of the batarang. Then I sanded it and drew the design of Batman's weapon, tracing it horizontally to make the most of the wood's surface.
En el primer paso lo que hice fue escoger la madera, utilicé una madera reciclada de un viejo cajón, la cual tenía madera muy suave, sin embargo fácil de romperse, así que la escogí para tallar muy bien. Luego de eso lo que hice fue cortarla de una tamaño donde pudiera dibujar la figura del batarang, después la pulí con una lija he hice el diseño del arma de Batman, lo hice de forma transversal para poder aprovechar la mayor parte del espacio de la madera.

Once I have made the sketch of the drawing and removed the excess wood, I begin to shape the piece. The way to do this is to start with the edges. Since it is the symbol of a bat, it has sharp wing edges, so I start with those curved edges. I use a stationery knife to make the job faster.
Una vez que he realizaod el boceto del dibujo y quitado la madera sobrante comienzo a darle forma a la pieza, la forma de hacerlo es comenzar por los bordes, como es el símbolo de un murciélago este tiene los bordes de las alas afiladas, así que comienzo por esos bordes que son curvos, utilzo la nava de papelería para hacer el trabajo más rápido.

Next, I begin shaping one of the wings, starting from the lower part. To do this, instead of using the school knife, I switch to gouges, which have a smaller, sharper blade. I first press the sharp blade into the line, and then gradually remove the wood until nothing remains and the shape is visible.
Seguidamente comienzo a darle forma a una de las alas, pero por la parte inferior baja. Para hacerlo en lugar de utilizar la navaja escolar, las cambio por las gubias las cuales tienn la hoja más pequeña y afilada. Así es como primero por el trazo voy hundiendo la hoja afilada y después voy retirando la madera poco a poco hasta que no quede nada y la forma sea visible.

Now I'm doing the same process on the left wing. As I mentioned before, this wood is very soft and brittle, and cutting it at an angle wasn't so easy, so I had to be even more careful not to damage the wood. Here you can see how the piece is coming along.
Ahora hago el mismo proceso en el ala de la izquierda, como había mencionado antes, esta madera es muy suave y quebradiza, y el hacerla de forma inclinada los cortes no eran tan fáciles, por lo que tuve que tener aún más cuidado de no dañar la madera. Aquí se puede observar como va quedando la pieza.

Now I'm gradually shaping the wings, starting with the upper part. As I carve, I'm also sanding this section, since unlike the lower part, it's curved. So I'm using the sandpaper to smooth it out. I'm also shaping the bat's head by sanding the central part.
Ahora le voy dando forma poco a poco a las alas pero en la parte superior, al mismo tiempo cuando voy tallando también voy lijando esta parte, ya que al contrario de la parte inferior, aquí es curvo, así que con la lija voy puliendo esa parte para que quede lisa. También le voy dando forma a la cabeza del murciélago lijando la parte central.

After finishing the symbol, I added some small details. One of these details was sharpening the edges all around, starting with the wing edges, then the inner underside, and finally the tail. Next, I added stripes with cuts that run across the entire piece, just like in the original design.
Luego de terminar de hacer el símbolo queda hacer pequeños detalles, uno de los detalles es hacerle filo por todo alrededor, comenzando con los bordes de las alas, luego en la parte inferior interna y de último la cola. Luego hice unas rayas las cuales tienen unos cortes, estas rayas atraviesan toda la pieza, así como en el diseño original.

Now, a piece about Batman wouldn't be a piece without darkness, so I started painting the piece black, except for the edges and the cut I'd made in the middle of the figure. Using acrylic paint, I covered the entire area I mentioned earlier, and once it started to dry, I changed the tone and began using gold on the edges to make them stand out. Finally, I dipped the whole piece in a coat of gloss varnish to give the paint a better finish, and that's how it was done.
Ahora, una pieza acerca de Batman no sería tal cosa sino tuviera oscuridad, así que me puse a pintar la pieza de color negro, con excepción de los bordes y el corte que había hecho en el medio de la figura. Así que con pintura acrílica fuie cubriendo toda la parte que dije antes, y cuando comenzo a secar entonces cambié el tono y comencé a utilizar dorado en los bordes para que resaltara. Por último, sumergí la pieza entera en un baño de barniz brillante para que la pintura quedara mejor, y así quedó finalizado.
What do you think of the final result? The varnish was definitely the best part, since the black paint was matte and wasn't going to shine, so that made a big difference. ¿Qué les ha parecido el final? sin duda el barniz fue lo mejor, ya que la pintura de color negro era de tono mate y no iba a brillar, así que esto cambio mucho, así también paso con el color dorado, aunque este si era un poco más brillante.
