In my opinion, painting someone's portrait is one of the greatest challenges in painting. Regardless of the technique, capturing the essence of a person, the depth of their gaze, their smile, or their serenity, whatever their expression may be, is an uphill battle for me. That is why the art of painting is studied, cultivated, and lived.

Hacer el retrato de alguien es en mi opinión uno de los más grandes retos cuando se trata de pintura. Sin importar la técnica, lograr captar la esencia de una persona, la profundidad de su mirada, su sonrisa o su serenidad, cualquiera que sea su expresión, es por demás una colina cuesta arriba para mí. Es por eso que el arte de pintar se estudia, se cultiva, se vive.

These days I tried to paint a portrait of my son, and I use the word “tried” because obviously it is not well done. Here and there, I perceive something of his smile, but there is much room for improvement. I did not make a sketch but worked on the lines of the face directly on the paper and from there everything else, as you can see in the final result.

En estos días intenté hacer un retrato de mi hijo, y uso la palabra “intento” porque obviamente no está bien logrado. Por allí, en algún lado percibo algo de su sonrisa, pero es mucho lo que se debe mejorar. No hice un boceto sino que trabajé en las líneas del rostro directamente sobre el papel y de allí todo lo demás, pues ya lo ven en el resultado final.

However, I decided to share it because it takes a lot of effort for me to do things like this. I am passionate about it, yes, but I am very limited by my eyesight. I used watercolors because it is the technique I enjoy the most. Watching the pigments run on the water is really rewarding. I used brushes of different sizes, absorbent paper, an eraser, a graphite pencil, and watercolor paper. I didn't know the quality of the paper because I bought it in bulk at the stationery store.

Sin embargo, me animé a compartirlo porque es un gran esfuerzo para mí hacer cosas de este tipo. Me apasiona, sí; pero estoy muy limitada por la vista. Utilicé acuarelas porque es la técnica que más disfruto. Ver correr los pigmentos sobre el agua es realmente gratificante. Usé pinceles de diferentes tamaños, papel absorbente, borrador, lápiz de grafito y un papel para acuarelas. No llegué a conocer su calibre porque la compré al minoreo en la papelería. .

I didn't attach the paper to the table; I actually forgot to do so. These are mistakes that only amateurs make. I drew directly on the watercolor paper with a pencil, without a sketch, and that was my first mistake, because I settled for the basic drawing. I achieved a good structure in the eyebrows and facial features, but this photo was disproportionately elongated when printed, and the jaw looks very pronounced.

No fijé el papel a la mesa, la verdad lo olvidé, estos son errores que solo comete un amateurs. Realicé el dibujo a lápiz directamente sobre el papel acuarela, sin un boceto y allí fue mi primer fallo, pues me conformé con el dibujo base. Conseguí una buena estructura en las cejas y las promociones del rostro, Pero está foto se alargó de forma desproporcionada al imprimir y la mandíbula se ve muy pronunciada.

I continued with the application of pigments, first brick color, combined with brown and red. Starting with the lighter tones, which will give us the highlights, and then the darker colors for the shadows. Conceptually, this is what should be done, but the execution is not so simple, as you have to be very precise with the amount of water and pigments you put on the brush.

Seguí con la aplicación de pigmentos, primero color ladrillo, combinado con café y rojo. Partiendo de los tonos más claros, que nos darán las luces y luego los colores más oscuros para las sombras. Conceptualmente esto es lo que se debe hacer, sin embargo la ejecución no es tan simple ya que hay que tener una gran precisión en la cantidad de agua y pigmentos que cargamos en el pincel.

I continued with black, which is more delicate to apply, because when using black, almost everything we do is irreversible. This part always makes me nervous. The hair also requires skill and patience. Achieving a realistic effect is no small feat. Poorly executed highlights and strands of hair can completely ruin a promising painting. In my case, I am clearly just someone who is experimenting with watercolors.

Seguí con el color negro que es más delicado de aplicar, pues al utilizar el negro, casi todo lo que hagamos es irreversible. Está parte siempre me pone nerviosa. También la parte del cabello requiere pericia y paciencia. Conseguir el efecto realista es cosa mayor. Las luces y los hilos de cabello mal realizados pueden hacer que una pintura prometedora se arruine completamente. En mi caso, claramente solo soy alguien que está experimentando con las acuarelas.

The last step in this drawing was to apply color to the outline of the face. I took advantage of this step to shorten the jaw a little and make myself a little happier with the result. I think I'm going to try again with this same portrait, as I've been watching some videos where they start by applying blue or green tones to the face and then the final colors, which gives a more realistic skin tone, perhaps due to color theory. Maybe I'll find a photo with more contrast to work better on the light and shadows, as this one is very bright. I bid you farewell and thank you for visiting my blog. Blessings.

Lo último en este dibujo, fue aplicar color en el contorno del rostro. Aproveche este paso para acortar un poco la mandíbula y quede un poquito más conforme con el resultado. Creo que voy a intentarlo nuevamente, con este mismo retrato, pues estuve mirando algunos vídeos donde empiezan aplicando tonos azules o verdes en el rostro y luego los colores definitivos y se tiene un tono de piel más realista, quizás sea por la teoría del color. Tal vez consiga una foto con más contraste para trabajar mejor esa parte de luces y sombras, pues está tiene mucha iluminación. Me despido y les agradezco la visita a mi blog. Bendiciones.
